Cosmetology school is usually a combination of classroom education and hands-on learning. The day to day depends on how far along the student is in the program. Newer students spend almost all of their time in the classroom, while experienced students spend most of their time on the salon floor. Programs and hours will vary from school to school, but most include a number of hours that need to be completed before the student can pass the state board licensing exam. Cosmetology schools make it their priority to prepare students for this exam so they can practice cosmetology within their state.

Program director Patrick Abernethy, who has been an instructor with Phagans since 2011, has developed the program so students can both gain an understanding and love of sculpting hair and get satisfaction from performing quality services for clients.
Abernethy says both creative and technical personalities will thrive in the art of Barbering. The class will be 1,350 clock hours and will take students roughly 16 months to complete. A new class starts every 12 weeks.
“I foresee a well-rounded program that educates students in the classic art of barbering as well as the most current, cutting-edge techniques – a program that truly infuses trend with tradition,” Abernethy says.

For many students night classes fill an important need. They provide students with time to work during the day and achieve their dreams after hours. We’ve been holding night classes at our Lloyd Center location for a number of years and asked a couple of night class students some questions about their experiences.
