It’s been a great month at Phagans School of Hair Design!
With every class that begins their training with us, we strive to help create opportunities for our students to grow and expand. Personal growth is a huge part of our culture, as well as mastering the skills for your program.
Beyond that, we want our students to grow in the skills that are in demand, and help them create a portfolio that could help keep their client books full!

We can’t think of anything better than when a Phagans graduate follows their dreams and has a successful career. It was an obvious choice to have Dinah Ritchey as our first choice to be our Phagans All-Star! Dinah is a wonderful example of chasing your dreams and never giving up on yourself. Dinah graduated from Phagans in 2003 with a full cosmetology license, and right after dove into her career that led to her owning her successful salon, Urban Colorz. It was awesome to be able to take some time out of the our day and chat with Dinah about how she turned her passion into a successful career.

Meet Sarah Pein. We are very proud of her and her recent graduation from the Lloyd Campus. Our loss is a salon’s gain, as she looks to transition into being behind the chair. Congratulations Sarah on getting licensed and following your dream. You have worked hard and we will miss you, but we know you will be successful and always a big part of the Phagans family.
I was wanting to save up for Cosmetology School. My fiancé actually saw that Phagans was hiring. I thought it would be great to work at a cosmetology school to motivate me to save up. I was working at McDonalds at the time, so I was very excited to apply at Phagans.

Why did you enroll in beauty school?
At 19 I watched “Chicago” the musical for the first time on stage, and decided that was what I wanted to do, work on Broadway. The idea of my work being shown on stage for the world to see was my ideal choice of career. I’m a “jack of all trades”, have my degree in English and journalism, as I thought at one point I wanted to be a history teacher! I have done hair and makeup for drag queens and community outreach programs like Nightscare Productions where we raise money and have food drives for the local community.
Why did you choose Phagans?
It was the nicest school and they actually answered my inquiry! I moved …

February: We hold a Facebook contest where people could log on to the Phagans Facebook page and vote for their favorite student updo.
March-April: Students work through much of March and April to help produce a fashion photo shoot, title “ETHOS”, with Portland fashion photographer Lavenda Memory. Images from the shoot are used to update all of Phagans’ marketing materials.
May: Students add color streaks in people’s hair to help raise awareness for Streaks for Stroke.
Also in May, celebrity makeup artist and Style Network Jerseylicious cast member Olivia Sharpe holds a series of workshops on how to create a flawless smokey eye. Each of the four workshops features both Olivia and fellow …

In many ways 2013 for Phagans was a year that allowed us to catch our breath. We have settled in to our new location at Clackamas Town Center, did a little remodeling of our Lloyd Center location, became even more engaged with our community, and spent the year growing the rolls of our alumni.
This year also was the 65th Anniversary of Phagans, so we spent the year honoring founder Wilma Lee Phagans Harrington with a number of events, prizes, and goody bags for customers.
Among our schools’ biggest accomplishments this year was both locations passed their 6-year accreditations “without limitations”, which in our world means with flying colors! I’m very grateful and proud of our staff for helping us achieve this high honor and carry on …

Why did you choose Phagans and the night program?
I heard good things about Phagans and the location was perfect for me. I chose the night course, as I work during the day and have a child and so it was a good fit for my schedule.
What do you like about going to school?
I really enjoy the clients and making them happy. I’ve made some good friends here and I love the instructors, too.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about going to beauty school?
July 18, 2013
I didn’t know what I wanted to do in high school. I had no idea that I would end up going to beauty school, but I knew that I was really passionate about beauty and the ability to change your appearance.
How did you end up at Phagans?
I was always on the web and looking at beautiful people. This made me realize that so many of them were hairdressers. I remember the exact moment at the gym and I was looking on the web and realized this was what I was passionate about. When I was young, I loved being in my mom’s makeup and doing her hair and it took me a while to connect all …

We are very proud and honored to announce that Phagans School of Hair Design has been invited to do the hair and make-up for the Rose Festival Princesses, for the coronation of the Queen, on Saturday June 8, 2013. This is the third year our students have been styling the Rose Festival Court.
The 2013 Rose Festival Court (below) made their first public appearance in April at Royal Rosarians Blessing of the Festival at Grace Memorial Church in Notheast Portland. The annual Blessing is both a memorial service and a preview of the upcoming Rose Festival.
