Add Nail Technology to Your Education

At Phagans School of Hair Design, Nail Technology is only offered as a dual program, meaning students complete nail training alongside another core program such as Hair Design or Esthetics (or both Hair Design and Esthetics for a more robust cosmetology education).

This structure allows you to expand your skill set, increase your career options, and meet Oregon State licensing requirements while training in more than one area of the beauty industry.

Format:

Students progress through the course in four levels: freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. To progress from one level to the next, students must complete the required hours, required operations, written evaluations and practical evaluations for each level.

Freshman level is three weeks and is spent in a classroom setting where students learn the basics in manicuring, nail extensions, and practice on each other and models. Students are given written and practical evaluations at the end of each week.

After successful completion of the 3 weeks of freshman classes, students are assigned to the clinic floor to start getting practical experience and to learn good customer service. Once assigned to the clinic, students attend other classes each week.

Throughout the instruction, we teach a wide variety of classes on artificial nails including fiberglass, acrylic, gel, and many others.

In addition to the above mentioned classes, students also attend half- and full-day classes at the sophomore, junior, and senior levels to increase their skills in business and in preparation for written exams and for the state licensing exam.

Nail Technology Program FAQs

1

Can I enroll in the Nail Technology program by itself?

Nail Technology at Phagans is offered as part of a dual program, which means students complete nail training alongside another program such as Hair Design or Esthetics. This structure gives students more flexibility, a broader skill set, and more career options after graduation, while still meeting Oregon state requirements for nail licensure.

2

How long does the Nail Technology portion take?

The Nail Technology portion of the program is 281 hours. Your admissions team will help you understand how those hours fit into your overall dual program schedule so you know exactly what your timeline looks like before you enroll.

3

I am mostly interested in nails. Is a dual program still worth it?

It could be for you! Many students start with nails as their main passion and later discover that having additional training makes them more employable and more flexible in their careers. Dual training can open doors to salons, spas, and other opportunities that might not be available with only an education in nails.

4

Will I get hands-on experience with real clients?

Absolutely. After completing the initial classroom portion, students move onto the clinic floor where they work with real clients under instructor supervision. This is where skills, speed, and confidence really start to come together, and where many students begin to feel like working professionals.

5

What types of nail services will I actually learn?

Students are trained in manicuring, pedicuring, artificial nail application, and maintenance, including acrylics, gels, fiberglass, and other systems. You can also learn about nail structure, disorders, and sanitation so you are prepared for both the exam and real-world work.
