If you and your significant other are planning to hit the stores to take advantage of the Black Friday deals this year, you may want to do a little preparation to ensure that your day is successful. You could make a list of the stores you want to visit and the gift items you’re seeking. But even more useful could be learning about the differences in how men and women usually shop.
On Black Friday Phagans’ retail stores open at 6am, with special deals and goodie bags for first 100 people and lots of other fun stuff all day!
According to Daniel Kruger, a professor at the University of Michigan, holiday shopping is merely “foraging in a modern retail environment.” He sees years of evolution at work as he watches men and women approach the sale racks.
In many cultures, men have traditionally been the hunters of the tribe, so their shopping style is more direct like hunting. Men have an item in mind, go in, and get out. They also tend to search by product (i.e. we’re hunting elk, not fish) and make a fast decision. When they are done, they are done, wanting to get the ‘meat’ home as quickly as possible.
Women, on the other hand, have evolved as gatherers. They spend a lot of time filling their shopping basket one item at a time and, according to the US Census Bureau, are responsible for 80% of consumer spending. As gatherers, women were responsible for finding the highest quality edible plants to share with the tribe. If they accidentally brought home something poisonous, the group suffered. So today, women study quality and price, search by brand, and are aware of sales. They invest more time in the process.
If you find yourself growing irritable with your companion during the rush of shopping the Friday after Thanksgiving, take some time to remember why your significant other acts the way they do. It’s just evolution. When you understand each person’s inherently different shopping strategies, it can help diffuse the tension. You may even want to separate for a bit of solo shopping and make plans to meet up later at a favorite restaurant to unveil your bargains.
Whether you’re running in to grab one particular product for your significant other or just wanting to browse the retail shop, Phagans is a great place to shop during the holidays. On Black Friday Phagans’ retail stores open at 6am, with special deals and goodie bags for first 100 people and lots of other fun stuff all day! Throughout the rest of the holiday season, retail stores will be open seven days a week to help you no matter your shopping style.
