What Programs Does Phagans School of Hair Design Offer?

At Phagans School of Hair Design, we offer many different educational paths within the beauty industry. We know each student is unique and has different career goals. That’s why we’ve made it easy for you to learn what’s important to you!

We offer a full program, several dual programs, and a few standalone programs.

Full Program

Our full program is your fastest track to becoming a full specialist! It combines learning in all three branches of cosmetology: Hair Design, Nail Technology, and Esthetics. If you want to become a well-rounded cosmetologist, this course is for you! There are also many benefits to learning more than one specialty that can help you find a thriving career.

This program is 1835 hours of instruction and starts with classes in Hair Design. You will branch out into learning nail technology and esthetics from there!

Dual Programs

Our dual programs fast-track learning in two fields. You can choose from a few combinations based on your interests and career goals:

• Hair Design/ Nail Technology: 1391 hours
• Hair Design/ Esthetics: 1594 hours
• Esthetics/ Nail Technology: 725 hours

If you start with a dual program and decide to become a full specialist instead, you can always add the required course after enrolling! Just remember this will take a little more time than enrolling in the full program to begin with. For example, if you start with the dual Hair Design/ Nail program (1391 hours) and add the standalone Esthetics program (600 hours), it will take you a total of 1991 hours to become a full specialist instead of 1835.

Standalone Programs

Our standalone programs help you master only one area of cosmetology. Some programs (like Barbering or our Cadet Instructor programs) are only available as a standalone.

• Barbering: 786 hours
• Hair Design: 1150 hours
• Esthetics: 600 hours
• Cadet Instructor: 1,000 hours approximately

Note: Our Nail Technology program is not available as a standalone program. If you want to learn nail technology, you will need to enroll in either our full specialty program or one of our dual programs. If you first enrolled in the dual Hair Design/ Esthetics program, you can always add Nail Technology to become a full specialist.

What Are the Benefits of Learning Multiple Specialties?

Now that you know what paths you can take, the next question is whether you should enroll in our full program, a dual program, or a standalone program. While you can still have a thriving career with only one specialty, there are several benefits to learning multiple. Here are just a few!

1. Explore Your Passions
   Not sure what your passion is? Enrolling in a dual program or our full program allows you to explore. Or, if you already have one passion, enrolling in multiple specialties may lead you to another passion! You may start out interested in hair, but find that you love esthetics just as much. You never know what you may love until you try it!
2. Increased Earning Potential
   Having multiple specialties can increase your earning potential. It allows you to offer more skills and services to your clients, giving you more opportunities to upsell. This can help you increase your ticket price and your bottom line!
3. Fill Your Books
   If your clients come to you for multiple services, you will also likely see them more often. For example, your hair client used to see you every other month for color, but now sees you every three weeks for a nail fill! Being a one-stop-shop for your clients can help you fill your books.
4. More Marketable
   Have your eye on a certain dream salon or spa? Having more skills makes you more marketable during job hunting. This may give you a better opportunity to potentially snag your dream job!
5. More Career Options
   Knowing multiple skills can also increase your career options. For example, knowing hair and makeup (which you can learn in our dual Hair Design/ Esthetics program) can open the door for you to work in film, music videos, or photoshoot work! Many of these editorial fields look for someone proficient in both hair and makeup. Knowing manicuring as a full specialist can open even more doors!

You may also find it helpful to shadow industry professionals in different careers! Spend a day talking with your go-to nail technician, hairstylist, or esthetician. They may help you learn different benefits to each field you were previously unaware of.

Yes! At Phagans School of Hair Design, we want our education to work for you. That’s why we offer flexible scheduling options, including evening and weekend classes.

2. Pass the Oregon State Exams

The next step to receive your barbering certification is to pass the necessary exams. In Oregon, there are three examinations you will need to complete:

• Barbering Practical Examination: Your school will administer this exam, and you will need to submit proof of receiving a passing score to be eligible to take the Oregon written exam.
• Barbering Written Examination: After passing your practical exam, contact the Oregon Health Licensing Office to get information about taking your written exam.
• Oregon Laws and Rules Written Examination: Questions for this exam are taken from Oregon’s health and safety codes, which you can find here.

On the day you take your examinations, you will need to bring two forms of acceptable federal, state, or local ID, one of which must have your photo. You can also expect to pay several fees related to certification on this day:

• Verification of Licensure Fee (if using reciprocity)
• Application Fee
• Oregon Laws and Rules Examination Fee
• Barbering Written Examination Fee
• Certification Fee

Once you have passed your exams and paid the necessary fees, you can walk out the door with your barbering certification that day!

Already Licensed in Another State?

Are you already a licensed barber in another state? Under Oregon’s rule of reciprocity, you can transfer your license from your state. You will just need to provide proof of licensure and pass both of the Oregon written examinations.

Getting Your Oregon Cosmetology License in 6 Steps

Step 1: Research Your Schools

This step is pretty important because it can determine your future success. When researching your school, consider the following:

• Location: If you plan on moving, do your research on the city that school is in. Ensure you choose a school in a city you feel comfortable moving to. Otherwise, try to choose a school within your city limits to cut down on travel time and expenses.
• School programs: Many beauty schools offer multiple programs including cosmetology, esthetics, nail design, and more. Really think about what you’d like to focus on, and how passionate you are about your chosen subject.
• School authority: There are many beauty schools in the world to choose from, and Oregon is no exception. Here is where you will need to visit each potential school’s website and look into placement rates, graduation rates, and licensure rates. Make sure they are accredited, and that you can see yourself succeeding at your chosen school.
• Tuition: Do your research to figure out how you will be able to pay for your tuition. Does the school offer financial aid or scholarships? Can you make payments, and how much is the total cost? Get your finances in order before you sign up.

Step 2: Sign Up

This is the best part! You are just beginning your journey and you likely can’t wait to get started! Many schools will have you contact them and from there set up a time for you to meet and tour the school. Visiting campus is the best way to see what the school has to offer. During your tour, you’ll be able to meet with a member of the team and answer any questions you may have. A tour is the perfect opportunity for you to get to know the school, and for the school to get to know you. Make sure you are checking all the boxes during this step so you don’t miss any necessary information.

Step 3: Complete Your Training

The state of Oregon requires that students must complete 1835 school hours to obtain their cosmetology license. 

Make sure that during your time with Phagans, you are arriving to your courses on time, you are dressed appropriately, and you are in a mindset to truly learn and grow with us. Step 4: Take the Exam

Visit Oregon.gov to find the required IDs, practice exams, and office hours for taking the exam. Make sure you are choosing to take the written exam for the correct emphasis (i.e. cosmetology vs. barbering).

In addition to completing your hours with Phagans, you can study for your exam by downloading Oregon’s practice exams, asking to practice on friends and family, and asking for additional training from our professional instructors. We believe each of our students can pass the state exam.

How Much Time Will I Spend at Cosmetology School?

How much time you spend at your beauty school depends on the program you choose. Most beauty school students tend to go full-time. They’ll spend around eight hours a day five days a week at the school working toward completing their program hours. Many schools will offer more flexible scheduling that can allow students to attend part-time with morning or evening classes.

The other factor to consider is the number of program hours required to complete the program at your school. Some cosmetology programs have hair, nails, and skin combined together in a single program that can have more program hours to complete. Other programs, usually named “hairdressing” or “hairstyling” courses only cover hair. These programs will often have fewer program hours.

Each state across the country has its own cosmetology board that determines the number of program hours required to complete a course. Oregon state, where Phagans is located, requires the following hours for each respective program:

• Hair Design – 1150 hours
• Barbering – 786 hours
• Esthetics – 600 hours
• Nail Technology – 281 hours

Phagans offers courses for all of these different licenses, and each of them meet or exceed the state-required minimum hours. We try to help our students be as ready as possible to sit for their licensing exams!

Choosing a cosmetology program can be intimidating, so be sure to research schools and programs thoroughly. You might want to select part-time evening classes if you already have to work a job, or maybe full-time classes if you have that freedom so you can finish sooner. What Will I Learn in Cosmetology School?

Cosmetology school covers many things! While all beauty school programs are different, most of them keep a similar core education. The majority of programs cover everything from cuts and color to theory and chemistry. Nails and skin are often included in cosmetology programs, but it’s important to check the details of your particular program to make sure the topics you are interested in are covered.

   When you come in for your tour the career planner can answer any questions you may have.
