Should You Tour a Beauty School Before Enrolling?

It’s important to find a beauty school that is a good fit for you. One of the best ways to learn more about a school is to take a tour. Visiting in person gives you an opportunity to see the learning environment, meet members of the school community, and ask questions before making your decision.

During your tour, you can:

  • See the school’s classrooms and learning spaces.
  • Learn about the school’s programs.
  • Ask about financial aid for those who qualify.
  • Learn about the enrollment process.
  • Meet with a Career Planner and ask questions.
  • Get a better idea of what being a student at Phagans may be like.

At Phagans, a tour is an important part of the enrollment process. During your visit, you can meet with a Career Planner to discuss program information and get answers to questions you may have.

If you’re interested in one of our programs, request information and schedule a visit to Phagans. We would love to help you take your first steps into the world of beauty.

What Information Should You Gather Before Beauty School?

If you’ve found a beauty school and taken a tour, it’s time to gather more information. A great way to learn more is by talking with a Career Planner and asking questions about the program, enrollment requirements, costs, schedules, and what you can expect as a student.

If you don’t know what questions to ask, here are a few to get you started:

  • What forms or documents do I need?
  • What will I learn in my program?
  • What is the class schedule?
  • Do I qualify for financial aid or scholarships?
  • What does tuition include?
  • What makes your school unique?
  • What is the best way to study and practice?
  • How can I begin building a portfolio?

Try not to feel nervous about asking too many questions. It’s your education and your future, so it’s important to be informed. Gathering information before starting beauty school can help you better understand what to expect.

What Do You Need to Enroll at Phagans?

Preparing for beauty school also means completing the enrollment process. Phagans currently asks prospective students to take a school tour, gather their application materials, interview with a Career Planner, complete the FAFSA® if they plan to use federal financial aid, and complete their Enrollment Agreement and enrollment fee.

Applicants must currently be at least 16 years old to apply. Phagans asks prospective students to gather the following items for their scheduled tour or interview:

  • Photo ID

What Tools Do You Need for Beauty School?

Most beauty school programs combine classroom education with hands-on learning. In your classes, be sure to bring something you can use to take notes. Whether it is a computer, tablet, or notebook, writing down the foundational knowledge you learn can give you something to reference as you study and practice.

Your beauty tools will depend on the program you’re enrolled in. The tools used by someone studying hair design, for example, can be different from those used by someone studying esthetics or nail technology.

Students may receive a student kit once classes begin. Kits can differ depending on the program you’re in, so ask Phagans what is currently included with your specific program before purchasing tools on your own.

How Can You Prepare for Your First Day of Beauty School?

Getting your paperwork and supplies together is important, but preparing yourself for the experience matters too. Beauty school introduces you to new techniques, terminology, people, and hands-on skills. You aren’t expected to know everything before you arrive.

A few things you can do before your first day include:

  • Prepare your schedule. Plan for transportation, work, childcare, or other responsibilities that need to fit around school.
  • Get organized. Keep important school information, documents, schedules, and supplies together.
  • Set goals. Think about what you hope to learn and accomplish during your program.
  • Be ready to practice. Developing beauty skills takes repetition and hands-on learning.
  • Ask questions. Your education is an opportunity to learn, so don’t be afraid to ask for clarification or guidance.

How Can You Feel More Confident Starting Beauty School?

Having a few back-to-school nerves is totally normal. Beauty school is a new experience, and it can involve meeting new people, practicing unfamiliar techniques, and learning skills you haven’t tried before.

We all need a confidence booster now and then. Here are a few ways to help yourself prepare:

  • Write down some of the things you’ve already achieved.
  • Create short-term and long-term goals to help motivate yourself.
  • Remind yourself why you decided to attend beauty school.
  • Make a list of things you’re already good at.
  • Remember that you’re attending school to learn and develop your skills.

Confidence doesn’t mean knowing how to do everything before your first day. Walk in ready to learn, practice, ask questions, and grow throughout your education.
