Holding Happiness by Holding Hands

Feeling stressed out? Anxious? Ill at ease? Happiness could be just at arm’s length.

A study by the University of Virginia psychologist, Dr. James Coan, showed that holding hands can make you feel more relaxed and happy by actually reducing activity in the stress response area of the brain.

In the experiment, Dr. Coan administered a mild electric shock to a group of women and measured their brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). He repeated the test twice more, once when the women were holding a stranger’s hand and again when holding their husbands’ hand. In both cases when holding hands, the activity in the area of the women’s brain related …

Phagans Clackamas Location to Add Night Classes

Phagans School of Hair Design will begin offering night classes at the Clackamas Town Center location in early 2012.
For many students night classes fill an important need. They provide students with time to work during the day and achieve their dreams after hours. We’ve been holding night classes at our Lloyd Center location for a number of years and asked a couple of night class students some questions about their experiences.
Name: Marvin Perry

Age: 46

What are you studying?
Hair Design

Do you work during the day?
Part time, while the weather permits.

Why did you choose the night program?
By going to school at night, I am allowed the opportunity to sustain a decent lifestyle by working part time and doing full time school at the same time.

What are …

Second Annual Beauty Drive Big Success

It was an exciting December for us, made even more so because during the entire month we held our Second Annual Beauty Drive.

Throughout the month, any client who donated a new, unwrapped toy at either the Lloyd Center or Clackamas Town Center Phagans location saved 50% on their salon services. Clients who donate will also be entered into a drawing for a holiday gift bag filled with products from Joico, which sponsored the event.

In the end Portland firefighters from Station 13 had to tote away 12 huge bags of toys for donation to their Toy and Joy program. Each year, the Toy and Joy program ensures that more than 12,000 children in the Portland area are not forgotten by Santa.

$3,100 Raised for Tristan Hicks

On December 14, 2011, both locations of Phagans School of Hair Design in Portland held a fundraiser for 2-year-old Tristan Hicks, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in February 2011. We’re happy to announced that with the help of our staff and clients we were able to raise more than $3,100 for his wellness fund. We donated all the salon service profits we made at both our stores.

Tristan is the son of Emily Hicks, a graduate and employee of Phagans. Unfortunately, Tristan’s battle isn’t over and his family could still use your help to pay for costly medical bills.

YOU can still donate

You can donate money to the …

Phagans: A look back and a look ahead

You know when I started to look back at this year I was amazed at all we accomplished. But before I take that look back I think it’s important to send some thoughts to those out there who are really struggling in these economic times.

Earlier in the year it did look like we were, as a nation and as a community, going to see recovery. Yet we still have double-digit joblessness, shrinking home prices, a banking system in crisis and no real end in sight.

Yet we are fortunate in the cosmetology industry because there really is no better time to make an investment in yourself and in your future. Cosmetologists are working and making money and many, because they work for themselves, have control …

Phagans Student Nail Art Winners

The recent nail art competition at Phagans inspired students at both the Clackamas and Lloyd locations to amp up their creativity and execution. Although the competition was fierce, we selected two winners whose efforts showed true excellence. And the winners are:

Valerie Etzel – Valerie started in April in the daytime nail program, but quickly added esthetics as well. She entered the competition because she loves expressing her creativity through nail art. She plans to focus on nails professionally once she completes the program this fall.

Francisca Serrano – Francisca, a night student at the Lloyd Center location, is working on the full course program and looking forward to graduating next spring. Her love for doing nails and facials is what spurred her to enter the nail …
