Is Flexible Scheduling Available?

Ready to get started? Let’s dive in!

What Programs Does Phagans School of Hair Design Offer?

At Phagans School of Hair Design, we offer many different educational paths within the beauty industry. We know each student is unique and has different career goals. That’s why we’ve made it easy for you to learn what’s important to you!

We offer a full program, several dual programs, and a few standalone programs.

Full Program

Our full program is your fastest track to becoming a full specialist! It combines learning in all three branches of cosmetology: Hair Design, Nail Technology, and Esthetics. If you want to become a well-rounded cosmetologist, this course is for you! There are also many benefits to learning more than one specialty that can help you find a thriving career.

This program is 1835 hours of instruction and starts with classes in Hair Design. You will branch out into learning nail technology and esthetics from there!

Dual Programs

Our dual programs fast-track learning in two fields. You can choose from a few combinations based on your interests and career goals:

Hair Design/ Nail Technology: 1391 hours

Hair Design/ Esthetics: 1594 hours

Esthetics/ Nail Technology: 725 hours

If you start with a dual program and decide to become a full specialist instead, you can always add the required course after enrolling! Just remember this will take a little more time than enrolling in the full program to begin with. For example, if you start with the dual Hair Design/ Nail program (1391 hours) and add the standalone Esthetics program (600 hours), it will take you a total of 1991 hours to become a full specialist instead of 1835.

Standalone Programs

Our standalone programs help you master only one area of cosmetology. Some programs (like Barbering or our Cadet Instructor programs) are only available as a standalone.

Barbering: 786 hours

Hair Design: 1150 hours

Esthetics: 600 hours

Cadet Instructor: 1,000 hours approximately

Note: Our Nail Technology program is not available as a standalone program. If you want to learn nail technology, you will need to enroll in either our full specialty program or one of our dual programs. If you first enrolled in the dual Hair Design/ Esthetics program, you can always add Nail Technology to become a full specialist.

What Are the Benefits of Learning Multiple Specialties?

Now that you know what paths you can take, the next question is whether you should enroll in our full program, a dual program, or a standalone program. While you can still have a thriving career with only one specialty, there are several benefits to learning multiple. Here are just a few!

Explore Your Passions
Not sure what your passion is? Enrolling in a dual program or our full program allows you to explore. Or, if you already have one passion, enrolling in multiple specialties may lead you to another passion! You may start out interested in hair, but find that you love esthetics just as much. You never know what you may love until you try it!

Increased Earning Potential
Having multiple specialties can increase your earning potential. It allows you to offer more skills and services to your clients, giving you more opportunities to upsell. This can help you increase your ticket price and your bottom line!

Fill Your Books
If your clients come to you for multiple services, you will also likely see them more often. For example, your hair client used to see you every other month for color, but now sees you every three weeks for a nail fill! Being a one-stop-shop for your clients can help you fill your books.

More Marketable
Have your eye on a certain dream salon or spa? Having more skills makes you more marketable during job hunting. This may give you a better opportunity to potentially snag your dream job!

More Career Options
Knowing multiple skills can also increase your career options. For example, knowing hair and makeup (which you can learn in our dual Hair Design/ Esthetics program) can open the door for you to work in film, music videos, or photoshoot work! Many of these editorial fields look for someone proficient in both hair and makeup. Knowing manicuring as a full specialist can open even more doors!

Tips to Choose the Right Program for You

Still not sure what program is right for you? Here are a few questions to consider that may help you decide:

What careers interest me?

What skills would be beneficial to have in these careers?

What added skills could help set me apart?

What skills do I definitely want to learn?

What skills might I want to learn?

What’s the fastest program track to teach me all I want to know?

You may also find it helpful to shadow industry professionals in different careers! Spend a day talking with your go-to nail technician, hairstylist, or esthetician. They may help you learn different benefits to each field you were previously unaware of.

Is Flexible Scheduling Available?

Are you considering a career in beauty? While many choose the route of becoming a hair professional, an often overlooked part of a beauty career is becoming a nail tech. This career is growing faster than average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and with good reason. In this blog post, we will explore why being a nail tech can be a great career choice and how pursuing a dual program at Phagans can elevate your skills, expand your career prospects, and can make you a highly sought-after professional in the beauty industry!

The Power Of Dual Programs

At Phagans School of Hair Design, we recognize that versatility is a key attribute in the beauty industry. To address this, you have the option to add a nail technology program to a hair design or esthetics course. As the hours required for licensing were recently reduced in the state of Oregon, you can combine nail tech programs with a variety of other courses. Our education programs strive to provide students with a sense of self-worth, pride, and professionalism.

This unique approach unlocks a wide range of benefits for aspiring beauty professionals:

Comprehensive Skill Set: Pursuing a dual program exposes you to a broader range of skills and techniques, making you a versatile beauty professional. By combining nail technology with cosmetology, for example, you can offer services such as hair styling, coloring, makeup application, and manicures. This can provide clients with a comprehensive beauty experience, making you a one-stop shop for all their needs.

Enhanced Career Prospects: With a dual program, you become a sought-after professional who can offer a wider array of services. Employers value professionals with diverse skill sets, as they can meet the evolving demands of the industry. Whether you aspire to work in a high-end salon, a luxury resort, or even pursue a career in film and television, a dual program equips you with the versatility you need to succeed.

Collaboration and Networking: Dual programs encourage collaboration between professionals from different industries. This collaboration fosters a creative environment where you can learn from others, exchange ideas, and offer advice. By working alongside experts in various fields, you broaden your perspective, develop new techniques, and build a strong network within the beauty industry.

Why Being A Nail Tech Can Be A Great Career

As a nail professional, you have a chance to learn more than just nail health and techniques. You can touch lives, build businesses, and create a career you can be proud of. Here are six reasons why pursuing a future in nail tech can be a great addition to your career choice.

1. it’s a creative outlet

If you are even remotely interested in nail styles, you know how creative, artistic, and complex they can be. From intricate miniature paintings to gorgeous gemstone mimicry, nails today are a far cry from the last decade. As a nail tech, you can explore various techniques, designs, and trends, providing clients with a unique and personalized experience!

Check out more nail art and the latest Instagram trends here.

We all love a little sparkle, a little pop of color, a tiny bit of beauty in our lives. It’s satisfying not only for the technician but also for the client. You get to provide a glimmer, an escape from the mundane. The joy of seeing your clients’ faces light up as they admire their nails can be truly fulfilling! Using your career to learn more artistic skills is the perfect way to blend what you want with what you need.

2. you can have career independence

Many nail techs have the opportunity to set their own schedules. Whether it be working in a salon or owning your own establishment, a career as a nail technician can often mean you have the option to set your own hours. This flexibility allows you to strike a healthy work-life balance and design a career that aligns with your needs and wants! That kind of independence can be one of the best parts of working in the beauty world.

3. there are alternative career options

As a cosmetologist or esthetician, you might have options for alternative careers. Salons are what most of us think of, but having the option of working with nails could mean working on photo shoots and film sets, working in the medical community, or even teaching as a nail art instructor.

You can play to your strengths and choose the parts of nail tech, esthetics, and cosmetology that you feel most passionate about when looking at careers.

4. you become part of people’s lives

As a nail tech, you have the privilege of building strong relationships with your clients. As a licensed nail technician, you spend a fair amount of one-on-one time with customers throughout the day. You become a source of relaxation and can connect with many individuals from all walks of life! With small-talk part of the territory and repeat customers, you can get to know any client base pretty well.

Giving them a look they love is well worth the hard work. Many veteran technicians say having clients leave satisfied and happy is one of the best parts of their jobs.

5. paying for school is possible!

Unlike traditional careers, becoming a nail technician doesn’t require traditional school or degrees. Beauty school can be quite different from your traditional college experience, but there are similarities too. Much like traditional colleges, many beauty schools offer scholarships and financial aid to those who qualify. However, the first step is finding an accredited school that offers financial aid.

Beauty schools offering financial aid must be accredited by an appropriate accrediting body such as the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences (NACCAS). You can search their database to see if the school of your choice has been accredited.

Phagans School of Hair Design is accredited by NACCAS and offers federal funding to those who qualify. They also accept a number of scholarships throughout the year and offer different payment plan options. Be sure to contact your school to see what they offer and what you might qualify for.

6. you can have personal satisfaction

Last, but certainly not least, a career including nails can be a way to find personal fulfillment in your chosen field. Not everyone gets to enjoy a job they love. Most are lucky to find some sense of satisfaction, and with nail work, you can find ample reason for feeling satisfied.

From the instant gratification of seeing your artwork completed to having customers leave happy, nail art is a great way to take pride in your work. The trick is deciding if nail technician is a career or just a job. Those who use their attitude to affect their work can find joy every day!

Are nails in your future?

Beyond that, we want our students to grow in the skills that are in demand, and help them create a portfolio that could help keep their client books full!

This last month we were able to do just that for our esthetics students.

Extending Our Skills, And Our Lashes

Lash extensions have been all the craze lately. Although they were first introduced way back in 2015 (yes, it feels that long ago for us, too) it has taken a few years for this seemingly simple process to hit the mainstream.

Nowadays chances are high you know one if not two – or five- people in your life who have had the procedure done.

Take a behind the door look as our esthetics work to increase their skill, and begin mastering this craft.

Offered as an additional course option to our current esthetics students, this one-day training helped our students to master this skill and become certified in it.

We were so excited that so many of our students took this opportunity and stuck to it like glue! With so much demand in this procedure, we can only imagine how this will impact their futures!

We had so much learning this skill, and everyone left with not only a new talent for their portfolio, but with long, luscious lashes.

At Phagans School of Hair Design, we are passionate about our students’ futures. We want every student who joins our family to find themselves in a career that brings them joy for years to come.

It’s 2018, and it’s officially time to book your next hair color appointment. You need a change like we all do. After 2017 we have all decided that it’s time to just take it easy. That means laid back colors, though that’s not to say that these colors won’t stop traffic. Each year we take a step further into our creativity. We express ourselves creativity from head to toe. This year we expect to see hundreds of ways to creatively dye our hair. Today we have gathered some of our favorite looks.

Pearl Blonde

Throughout the years, platinum blonde has been a trend. In 2018 we hope to see more of this beautiful color. It’s not as drastic as the platinum blonde you see everywhere you go. This look is elegant, soft, and our first pick. Don’t forget to shampoo it with purple shampoo to keep it from going yellow and copper.

Blorange!

Can’t decide between going red or going blonde? Why not pick both! This color lives in the “in-between” of being a redhead and a fun blonde. This color that will be jaw dropping when the sun hits it just right.

Mousy Blonde

Put away all of your hostility when you hear the word “mousy” referring to hair color. This year we are all about the “dull blonde”. This color is just enough to feel like a change from your regular look but with the natural feel. And come summer the sun will highlight pieces naturally. Double win!

Respect Your Elders

For as long as we can remember, people fear growing old and what comes with it. Like grey hair! Now people are literally fast forwarding the clock by adding grey pieces to their natural hair color. And the craziest part, it looks good! Who knew?

Midnight Blue

We still hope to see color this year. If you have dark hair and wants to add something to it, then add some dark blue! It’s subtle enough to not be loud but the perfect amount of change and color!

Rose Gold

Rose gold is still the hottest color, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon. We love implementing this color to hair. It’s another color that walks the “in-between” line. Is it pink? Is it blonde? If anything, it’s to die for.

Ain’t Nothing Butter!

Butter blonde is the color to have this year. There is less upkeep with this color than going platinum and the regrowth is more natural! An easy choice.

Don’t Stick to Your Roots

Whoever said that your roots should be a natural color obviously hasn’t seen this look. Find a color that complements your hair and have it blended into your roots! This will give you a bit of color without the full commitment.

Evening Shadow

This ash brown to platinum color will be making heads turn. At first glance it looks so natural! This is also a great color if you are are transitioning from one color to another. The regrowth is very low maintenance.

Brunette Babe

Just because you’re sticking with one color does not mean you’re boring. This beautiful brown has some gold and purple undertones that will bring warmth to your skin!

Great Hair, Don’t Care

We can’t wait to see where this year takes us, especially when it comes to our hair. Either a midnight blue or a mousy blonde, we are ready! If you’re tired of your look than that means it’s time to make a change. Book an appointment to become your best you! Let us know on Facebook what color you 2018 will be!

What they don’t realize is that there are specific portions of cosmetology that you can choose to specialize in. There are a lot of options of things to focus on for aspiring beauty pros.

Esthetics is another segment of the beauty industry that you can choose to specialize in. Most beauty schools that have cosmetology programs also offer esthetics programs. You may have some knowledge of what esthetics is, but in case you need a reminder, here is a complete explanation of esthetics and why it’s a great career choice.

Esthetics is All About the Skin

Where cosmetology has a lot of focus on hair, esthetics is almost entirely focused on the skin. The job of an esthetician is important because treating your skin well can make you feel and look beautiful. Helping you achieve that special glow is basically the job description of an esthetician. A certified esthetician knows all the tricks to make your skin clear and radiant.

You’re probably wondering what some of those tricks are, right? Here’s a few services that you can get from a certified esthetician.

Facials – Ever had a facial to help clear up your skin? If you haven’t tried it yet, you should. There is a wide variety of facials that you can get to help with different things. From cleansing to moisturizing and everything in between, there’s a facial for that! Estheticians can even be trained to analyze your skin and match you with a facial that will help you the most.

Waxing – Estheticians can also be experts at removing unwanted hair. Eyebrows, arms, and legs; estheticians wax it all.

Microdermabrasion – A microdermabrasion treatment is used to treat damaged skin. It can be used to help with scarring, skin discoloration, or sun damage. It’s a unique process that removes old, dead, or damaged skin cells to unveil a new beautiful layer. The effects of this kind of treatment are amazing!

Makeup – Yep. Makeup is another specialty of certified estheticians. If you love doing makeup, esthetics might be a good fit for you. You can also learn a lot more about makeup artistry in an esthetics program than you can from watching videos online. You can learn details as specific as what types of makeup to use with certain skin types.

These are only a few examples of things that certified estheticians can learn and do. You can see the full range of esthetics and skin care services in one of Phagan’s salons. Schedule an appointment to see estheticians at work.

Where do Estheticians Work?

Usually when people are considering beauty industry career possibilities, they want to know the types of places that they will be qualified to work. The great news is that there is lots of fun places that an esthetician can work.

You can search for a job in a salon or spa.

As a certified esthetician, you could start your own skincare business.

Many hotels and resorts have spas where guests can go to get esthetic services like facials and waxing.

If you want to work in the education side of esthetics, you can get your instructor license and teach others.

Skincare product companies hire estheticians to educate salon staff and other professionals about their products.

You could become a freelance makeup artist for weddings and photoshoots.

These are only a few examples of careers that certified estheticians can pursue but there are many, many more options.

What’s the Difference Between Esthetics and Cosmetology

In our full cosmetology program, you can learn everything that we teach in the esthetics program and more. Cosmetology encompasses all of esthetics in addition to hair design and nails. The big difference is that it takes 2,300 hours to become a certified cosmetologist while it only takes 600 hours to become a certified esthetician. So, if you don’t care to learn about hair and nails, you can build a career in esthetics much faster!

Ready to Get Started?

Are you excited to learn more about esthetics and to start building a new career? Contact us today! We can answer your questions about what it takes to become a certified esthetician and walk you through our enrollment process. We can’t wait to help you start your journey to an exciting new career.

It’s almost Valentine’s Day! This is a holiday that gives us an excuse to play around with those unused eyeshadow palettes and lipsticks, or even try out a new technique or two. Whether you plan to celebrate with a long-time partner, a few girlfriends, or maybe you’re finally ready to swipe right on that Tinder profile, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to go all out.

At Phagans, we love to see our students experiment with fun make-up looks. Here are some of our favorite makeup tips and tricks to help inspire you this Valentine’s Day.

1. Pink Eyeshadow

It wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without a little bit of pink. Reds, pinks, and purples have become some of the un-official colors of romance, love, and valentine chocolate boxes! Add some of these colors to your makeup pallet for something a little more memorable.

We love the look of a complete pink eye look. From a bold neon liner, to a smokey hot-pink shade that creates a halo around each eye, a splash of pink can’t be beat.

2. Red Lips

A bold red lip is iconic, glamorous, and timeless. Make your lips the focal point of the evening by shading them in a daring red hue. Be sure the lipstick you choose is a long-lasting stain that can live through a few sips of wine without smudging or coming off too-quickly.

We love a vampire-inspired burgundy, but you can also stick with a classic crimson for a holiday look no one can mistake.

3. Head-To-Toe Matching

Color blocking and coordination isn’t just for men’s belts and shoes. Get a complete look by matching your eyeshadow and lip shades to your blouse, dress, hair, or skin. A one-toned look can be elegant, formal, and super sexy when done right.

A nude look can be a sultry choice. Use some of your foundation as a base for your lips and blend it with a nude shade. Check out our blog on how to find the right foundation for your face.

You can also use a very light pink to barely highlight the apples of your cheeks as well as your inner lips. Use color blocking to match your chosen dress color to your eyeshadow or lips as well. A hot pink, red, or orange can be a refreshing pop of color.

4. More Mascara

Nothing is as feminine as long, thick eyelashes. Bring out your best feature this Valentine’s and add a bit more mascara to your look. Don’t be afraid of having it get a bit clumpy! A jagged, striking shape to your lashes will add to the drama!

If you’re afraid you don’t have the natural gifts of your own, check out Phagan’s eyelash extension services. We can help you achieve a Valentine’s Day look with beautiful lashes you’re truly excited about.

5. Cat Eyes

It’s a look that has been around since the times of the ancient Egyptians, and for good reason! A beautiful winged eyeliner elongates the eye’s shape and makes them the focal point of any look. Nothing says femininity, grace, or romance quite like this timeless makeup technique.

Start by lining the top lid in a dark brown or black and follow upwards from the outer corner to create a pointed edge. Trace your wing down and line your lower lid line halfway across for a more bolded look.

6. Dewy Highlights

Shimmery, glowing skin. Who doesn’t wish they had it? Give your face some natural highlights by applying shimmer to the tops of your cheekbones, the tip of your nose, under the brow bones and in the corner of your eyes. Don’t forget the moisturizer! Refreshed and hydrated skin is going to give you that instant glow.

Add some drama with a bit of dewy shine. Simply spritz some setting spray and add white or lighter foundation shades to those highlight areas of the face.

7. Hints of Glitter

Glitter can be a fun accent to any look, but when applying it in your makeup, be sure to use it wisely. A glittery eyeliner or shimmery eyeshadow is everything you need to draw attention to the right places.

Draw the eyes up to your brow bone, eye line, or lips with a bit of shimmer and glitter. You can even try the glue and dip approach to get a completely covered look.

Looking at a wall of foundation at your local drug store or cosmetics department can be overwhelming. With a myriad of types and colors, not to mention so many different brands, you may not know where to begin. But following these guidelines can help even the most inexperienced makeup wearer quickly find the right one.

What is foundation?

photo © 2009 Steven Depolo | more info (via: Wylio)
Foundation, as the name implies, is the base of any makeup routine, and sets the stage for all other applications. Foundation is used to produce an even skin tone over the entire face. It’s not to be confused with primer, which goes on under foundation, and is used in certain locations to fill holes and wrinkles to achieve smooth skin, nor concealer, which is a spot treatment to hide acne, redness or dark circles. Trying to use foundation to hide these kinds of imperfections won’t work as well.

Examine your face

It’s important to determine your skin type, from dry to oily or anywhere in between. Certain types of foundations are created for different skin types. A dermatologist can give exact answers to your skin type, but it’s just as easy to go to a makeup counter in a department store, or drop by one of our cosmetology schools, where the consultant will go over your skin type with you.

For dry skin, use a moisturizing formula, with words like “moisture-rich” or “moisturizing” on the label.

For oily skin, look for products with “oil control,” “oil-free,” or “mattifying.”

For combination (both dry and oily) skin, first determine if you tend to be oilier in your oily spots, or have just a little bit of oil. Cream-to-powder foundations help to combat multiple skin types for an even look.

For sensitive skin, mineral-based foundations work great.

For those with no skin problems, use bottles marked “for normal skin” or ones without any of the terms listed above.

How much coverage?

Women with blemishes or uneven skin tones may want to use a medium-coverage foundation. Mineral-based foundations are great for providing medium coverage. Women who do not have as much difference with their skin tones should choose a light-coverage foundation.

If a medium-coverage foundation does not help blend out facial redness, especially around the nose and cheeks, you may want to speak to your doctor about rosacea, which involves chronic skin irritation, and can cause more severe problems with your eyes and other parts of your face. There is no cure, but there are new prescription medicines to help with the symptoms.

Start with a clean palette

Before you go to the store to make your selection, clean your face really well. Putting on a moisturizer or even lipstick is fine, but don’t go any further. Putting on a foundation beforehand will defeat the purpose.

Color your world

Select a few foundation colors that are closest to your natural skin tone. Hold the back of your hand up to the color charts provided by the makeup companies to give you a place to start with a general idea. Lighter skin tones should go towards the pink end of the spectrum. Average skin tones should be good in the yellow spectrum. Nowadays, women with darker skin tones no longer have to go to African-American beauty shops. All of the most popular makeup companies have a broad range of ethnic colors.

Using the samples provided, take the colors you’ve chosen and test them on your cheek. Although using the back of your hand was a good place to start to get the product off the shelf, it’s not as good of a place to test the actual product. The color that “disappears” into your skin is the one that you should pick.

If you’re unsure of which color is best, don’t be afraid to ask, whether it’s the professional behind a department store makeup counter or the lady two feet away getting ready to make her own selection. We’re all in this together, and a friendly unbiased opinion can go a long way.

If it doesn’t look right when you get home, don’t be afraid to return it for another one. Many stores are becoming more relaxed about returning makeup.

Brand and price

There’s almost no right or wrong answer when it comes to brand. You can’t go wrong with famous name brands such as Maybelline, L’oreal, and Cover Girl, and it’s really just a matter of personal preference.

More expensive brands of foundation will provide more specialty types of coverage, but if those are out of your price range, shop around to find a store that has their own generic version of that product.
