Estheticians are a key part of the beauty industry. They help you maintain your look by offering makeup and skin care products, treatments, and recommendations.

Skincare has become an important part of the beauty industry as people look more towards the intersection of beauty and wellness. Total spending on beauty in general, and makeup and skincare in specific, is projected to grow at least through 2027. Younger consumers in particular are looking not to “put on a face” but rather to take better care of their skin while looking good…and estheticians are perfectly poised to meet this need.

Roles and Responsibilities

First of all, estheticians are not dermatologists. Estheticians work in the beauty industry and their primary goal is to make you look good. They are not qualified to treat diseases of the skin, although an esthetician may work with your dermatologist…for example, your dermatologist may diagnose you with an allergy to certain products and then your esthetician will work with them and you to find products you can use safely.

Estheticians perform skincare treatments such as facials, exfoliation, and removal of unwanted hair. They also work with you to determine how best to care for your skin and can help reduce signs of aging and manage (but not treat) basic skin conditions such as acme, eczema, and hyperpigmentation. They can’t prescribe medication, do invasive procedures, or diagnose medical conditions. As an esthetician, if you suspect somebody has a medical condition, it’s your job to advise them to consult their dermatologist, but you cannot diagnose it.

The other side of the job is professional makeup application, which overlaps with cosmetologists. Estheticians can also do brow and lash treatments, apply spray tan such that it looks good, etc. If somebody has a skin condition, they may go to an esthetician rather than a cosmetologist for makeup. Unlike cosmetologists, estheticians do not cut and style hair.

Estheticians may work at salons, but often work at spas or medical spas. They may work for a dermatologist or other medical practices. Some also work for skincare companies, either working in sales or assisting in customer service. Resorts and cruise ships may also hire estheticians to work in on site/on board spas.

In Oregon, you need to have 600 hours of training at an accredited school. Cosmetologists and estheticians are both beauty professionals that share working knowledge of how to perform beauty services that are in high demand. They can even perform some of the same services, such as skincare basics and makeup applications.

Both cosmetologists and estheticians need a license to operate and even learn some of the same skills during their time in beauty school. Ultimately, they’re both great professions and they typically share the same goal: To help people feel as good as they look.

What is Cosmetology?

The First Steps to Becoming an Esthetician

Research Beauty Schools in Your Area

Once you’ve decided that you want to pursue a future in esthetics, the first step is to research cosmetology schools near you. Many people only associate cosmetology school with hair cutting and coloring, but esthetics is a big part of cosmetology.

Many beauty schools include esthetics, hair, and nails in their cosmetology programs. Other beauty schools offer esthetics as a standalone program. Here at Phagans School of Hair Design, we offer both options, as well as dual programs (esthetics / hair design and esthetics /nail technology). This way you can be sure to learn about the programs that you love!

Search online for different beauty schools near you, then check out the programs they have to offer. Look at the length, price, and curriculum for each program you’re interested in. Narrow your options down to a few beauty schools you’d like to learn more about, then move onto the next step.

Schedule Tours of Different Cosmetology Schools

Next, schedule a tour of each cosmetology school you’re interested in attending. Touring each of the campuses will give you a better idea of what it’d be like to be a student there. Remember to ask questions during each tour to clear up anything you need more information about, such as class start dates and financial aid*. 

Once you’ve toured all the beauty schools you’re interested in, compare each option, choose your favorite one, and apply for your preferred program there. You should also consider taking the time to apply for financial aid. Qualifying for financial aid can make cosmetology school much more affordable.

Complete an Esthetics Program at a Beauty School

Once you’re officially an esthetics student, it’s time for the fun part: learning about skin care! While attending beauty school, you can hone your esthetics skills with a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training.
Depending on your beauty school’s esthetics curriculum, you might learn about makeup, facials, massages, and more. Here at Phagans School of Hair Design, our esthetics program covers:

Becoming an esthetician takes much less time than graduating from a four-year college. Our esthetics program is 600 clock hours, and our combined hair design/nail technology/esthetics program is 1835 clock hours—each includes practice performing services on real clients in our student salon.*
Once you graduate, congratulations! Finishing beauty school is a big step towards pursuing your passion for skin care. At this point, you’re on your way to becoming a licensed esthetician, but there are still a few more steps you need to take.

After Graduating from Beauty School

Pass the State Board Exam

Next, you’ll need to apply for the state board exam. Passing the exam is vital to becoming a licensed esthetician, so make sure to study hard beforehand. If you pass, you can receive your license from the state you’re in, and you’ll officially be a licensed esthetician!

Find a Job as a Licensed Esthetician

The next step is to find an exciting new job as an esthetician. You can consider applying for an esthetician position at many different businesses, including:

What Programs Does Phagans School of Hair Design Offer?

At Phagans School of Hair Design, we offer many different educational paths within the beauty industry. We know each student is unique and has different career goals. That’s why we’ve made it easy for you to learn what’s important to you!

We offer a full program, several dual programs, and a few standalone programs.

Full Program

Our full program is your fastest track to becoming a full specialist! It combines learning in all three branches of cosmetology: Hair Design, Nail Technology, and Esthetics. If you want to become a well-rounded cosmetologist, this course is for you! There are also many benefits to learning more than one specialty that can help you find a thriving career.

This program is 1835 hours of instruction and starts with classes in Hair Design. You will branch out into learning nail technology and esthetics from there!

Dual Programs

Our dual programs fast-track learning in two fields. You can choose from a few combinations based on your interests and career goals:

• Hair Design/ Nail Technology: 1391 hours
• Hair Design/ Esthetics: 1594 hours
• Esthetics/ Nail Technology: 725 hours

If you start with a dual program and decide to become a full specialist instead, you can always add the required course after enrolling! Just remember this will take a little more time than enrolling in the full program to begin with. For example, if you start with the dual Hair Design/ Nail program (1391 hours) and add the standalone Esthetics program (600 hours), it will take you a total of 1991 hours to become a full specialist instead of 1835.

Standalone Programs

Our standalone programs help you master only one area of cosmetology. Some programs (like Barbering or our Cadet Instructor programs) are only available as a standalone.

• Barbering: 786 hours
• Hair Design: 1150 hours
• Esthetics: 600 hours
• Cadet Instructor: 1,000 hours approximately

Note: Our Nail Technology program is not available as a standalone program. If you want to learn nail technology, you will need to enroll in either our full specialty program or one of our dual programs. If you first enrolled in the dual Hair Design/ Esthetics program, you can always add Nail Technology to become a full specialist.

What Are the Benefits of Learning Multiple Specialties?

Now that you know what paths you can take, the next question is whether you should enroll in our full program, a dual program, or a standalone program. While you can still have a thriving career with only one specialty, there are several benefits to learning multiple. Here are just a few!

1. Explore Your Passions
   Not sure what your passion is? Enrolling in a dual program or our full program allows you to explore. Or, if you already have one passion, enrolling in multiple specialties may lead you to another passion! You may start out interested in hair, but find that you love esthetics just as much. You never know what you may love until you try it!
2. Increased Earning Potential
   Having multiple specialties can increase your earning potential. It allows you to offer more skills and services to your clients, giving you more opportunities to upsell. This can help you increase your ticket price and your bottom line!
3. Fill Your Books
   If your clients come to you for multiple services, you will also likely see them more often. For example, your hair client used to see you every other month for color, but now sees you every three weeks for a nail fill! Being a one-stop-shop for your clients can help you fill your books.
4. More Marketable
   Have your eye on a certain dream salon or spa? Having more skills makes you more marketable during job hunting. This may give you a better opportunity to potentially snag your dream job!
5. More Career Options
   Knowing multiple skills can also increase your career options. For example, knowing hair and makeup (which you can learn in our dual Hair Design/ Esthetics program) can open the door for you to work in film, music videos, or photoshoot work! Many of these editorial fields look for someone proficient in both hair and makeup. Knowing manicuring as a full specialist can open even more doors!

Tips to Choose the Right Program for You

Still not sure what program is right for you? Here are a few questions to consider that may help you decide:

1. What careers interest me?
2. What skills would be beneficial to have in these careers?
3. What added skills could help set me apart?
4. What skills do I definitely want to learn?
5. What skills might I want to learn?
6. What’s the fastest program track to teach me all I want to know?

You may also find it helpful to shadow industry professionals in different careers! Spend a day talking with your go-to nail technician, hairstylist, or esthetician. They may help you learn different benefits to each field you were previously unaware of.
