Nine Tips for a Terrific Waxing Experience
A good waxing experience starts with proper preparation and gentle aftercare. Hair should generally be about ¼ to ¾ inch long, and the skin should be clean and free from irritation before waxing. Afterward, loose clothing, gentle skin care, and avoiding excessive heat or friction can help minimize temporary redness and irritation.
| Before Waxing | After Waxing |
|---|---|
| Let hair grow long enough for the wax to grip | Wear loose, comfortable clothing |
| Avoid waxing irritated or sunburned skin | Avoid hot baths, hot tubs, and excessive heat while skin is sensitive |
| Tell your service provider about medications or skincare products that may affect skin sensitivity | Use gentle, non-irritating skincare and protect skin from the sun |
“You’re going to do what? There?”
Let’s face it. Waxing, especially the first time, can be a little frightening.
Waxing removes hair from the root, and a little preparation before your appointment can help make the experience more comfortable. Read on for nine tips to help you prepare for waxing and care for your skin afterward.
Before
- Exfoliate gently: Gentle exfoliation before a waxing appointment may help remove dead skin cells. Avoid aggressive exfoliation immediately before waxing.
- Plan wisely: Let your hair grow out to at least ¼ inch before your appointment so the wax has enough hair to grip.
- Check your skincare routine: Let your service provider know if you use retinoids, acne treatments, or other products or medications that may make your skin more sensitive.
Immediately After
- Wear loose clothing: Loose, comfortable clothing can help reduce friction against freshly waxed skin.
- Hands off: Avoid unnecessary touching or rubbing immediately after your waxing appointment while the skin is sensitive.
- Avoid excessive heat: Skip hot tubs, saunas, very hot baths, and other sources of excessive heat until any temporary redness or sensitivity has settled.
After
- Protect your skin: Freshly waxed skin may be more sensitive. Protect exposed areas from the sun and avoid fragranced or irritating skincare products if your skin is still sensitive.
- Resume gentle exfoliation: Once your skin has calmed, gentle exfoliation can help keep the area smooth and may help reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs.
- Allow for regrowth: If you plan to wax again, allow the hair enough time to grow back so the wax can grip it effectively at your next appointment.
