At Phagans School of Hair Design, we want our students to learn all of these things and grow to become stronger members of the community.

To help our students become better rounded individuals, we try to provide them with opportunities to serve. Here’s some of our regular events, why we hold them, and some of the results we get from doing it.

Haircuts for the Homeless

Every spring, summer, fall, and winter we select a few students to go to the Portland Rescue Mission to give free services to homeless people. Phagans has been doing this for about two years and each time has been an incredible experience. Each time this event rolls around, the sign up sheet for students fills up quickly. They are excited to help. They want the opportunity to serve those in the community who are in need. It’s awesome to see and when the event is over our students have a new perspective on things.

What Serving Does

The primary motivation for getting involved in this event is for the benefit of the people we serve. Even though this is the main reason we do it, our students also benefit in a huge way. It seems like when our students serve without expecting anything in return is when they get the most. The students leave the Portland Rescue Mission feeling really proud of themselves. The excitement that they have for their future careers also grows.

This event and others like it have also made a big impact on the culture and atmosphere at Phagans. The students who participate bring a special positivity back to their classrooms. They are oozing with an excitement to help others. This can mean helping a classmate, a client, or even one of their teachers. It’s contagious and raises everyone up.

The Importance of Beauty

Ms. Carla is one of the instructors who helps coordinate this event. She said that the people who come to the Portland Rescue Mission show “A lot of gratefulness, a lot of tears of happiness and joy. They’re just blown away by how kind our students are and how much care they take. Our students don’t care that [the clients] are homeless and that means everything to these people.”

The reactions of the clients is a great testament to the importance of something as simple as getting a haircut. For people who may not be getting beauty services on a regular basis, it can make a huge difference in the way they see themselves. It can even change the way they feel about themselves. For many licensed cosmetologists or estheticians, this is the most satisfying part of the job: seeing how the work you do changes how people feel.

Build, Improve, Strengthen

Phagans has been around for 75 years. In those years we have been building a reputation of excellence in education for beauty professionals. We have also been striving to be a pillar in the community. Building the community up is part of our school culture and identity. By partnering up with an awesome organization like the Portland Rescue Mission we feel like we can truly make a difference. One of our goals is for our students to graduate with a desire to make a difference, too.

Build the Career of Your Dreams

That’s why the steps to becoming a student at Phagans is designed to give you all the information you need to make the right decision. Once you’ve gone through the steps to enrolling, you can be ecstatic about your future!

Schedule a Tour

The first step to becoming a beauty school student at Phagans is to schedule a tour of the school. You can do this online or by calling 503-858-0469 to set up a tour. If you fill out the form on our website, a career planner will contact you to set up a time for a tour. Get the ball rolling by setting up your tour. We bet you’ll love it!

Take Your Tour

When you come in for your tour the career planner can answer any questions you may have. They can give you the details on each program, how long it takes, and what you’ll need to do to become licensed. You can walk around the campus and see where you’ll be studying and working. The career planner will introduce you to instructors, other students, and maybe even the owner. During your tour you’ll be able to see what the culture of Phagans is like and if it’s a place where you think you could learn and grow.

Planning

Most, if not all, of our students have other things going in life while they are going to beauty school. Work and family are a couple common examples. When you come in for your tour our career planner can help you build a personalized plan. The goal is to help you find a way to achieve your goals of building a new career on a schedule that works for you!

Money Talk

Another thing that a career planner can help you figure out is how to pay for school. Financial aid is available to those who qualify, and a career planner can help you learn more about those options. They can show you where to apply for financial aid and explain the steps to make it easy. Paying for school is one of the biggest challenges that keeps aspiring beauty professionals from following their passion. Don’t fall into that trap. Let us help you find out how to pay for your education. We’ll show you that it’s totally possible!

Still Unsure?

Worried about being sold to or pressured into something? Don’t stress it. Our hope is to help people who really want to join the ranks of beauty professionals. For those who are ready to start building this kind of career, we are here to help them make plans to achieve that goal. If you’re on the fence, this can be a great way to help you make a better decision. If you decide that the path to a beauty career isn’t for you, that’s great. We’re happy that we can be there to help you make that choice. Your tour of Phagans will be all fun, no pressure.

Ready to Begin?

If you have been thinking about a career in the beauty industry schedule a tour of your Phagans campus today. We can help you get started on your journey to a career that you can love! We can’t wait to meet you.

When most people think about beauty school their minds automatically think of cosmetology. What they don’t realize is that there are specific portions of cosmetology that you can choose to specialize in. There are a lot of options of things to focus on for aspiring beauty pros.

Esthetics is another segment of the beauty industry that you can choose to specialize in. Most beauty schools that have cosmetology programs also offer esthetics programs. You may have some knowledge of what esthetics is, but in case you need a reminder, here is a complete explanation of esthetics and why it’s a great career choice.

Esthetics is All About the Skin

Where cosmetology has a lot of focus on hair, esthetics is almost entirely focused on the skin. The job of an esthetician is important because treating your skin well can make you feel and look beautiful. Helping you achieve that special glow is basically the job description of an esthetician. A certified esthetician knows all the tricks to make your skin clear and radiant.

You’re probably wondering what some of those tricks are, right? Here’s a few services that you can get from a certified esthetician.

Facials – Ever had a facial to help clear up your skin? If you haven’t tried it yet, you should. There is a wide variety of facials that you can get to help with different things. From cleansing to moisturizing and everything in between, there’s a facial for that! Estheticians can even be trained to analyze your skin and match you with a facial that will help you the most.

Waxing – Estheticians can also be experts at removing unwanted hair. Eyebrows, arms, and legs; estheticians wax it all.

Microdermabrasion – A microdermabrasion treatment is used to treat damaged skin. It can be used to help with scarring, skin discoloration, or sun damage. It’s a unique process that removes old, dead, or damaged skin cells to unveil a new beautiful layer. The effects of this kind of treatment are amazing!

Makeup – Yep. Makeup is another specialty of certified estheticians. If you love doing makeup, esthetics might be a good fit for you. You can also learn a lot more about makeup artistry in an esthetics program than you can from watching videos online. You can learn details as specific as what types of makeup to use with certain skin types.

These are only a few examples of things that certified estheticians can learn and do. You can see the full range of esthetics and skin care services in one of Phagan’s salons. Schedule an appointment to see estheticians at work.

Where do Estheticians Work?

Usually when people are considering beauty industry career possibilities, they want to know the types of places that they will be qualified to work. The great news is that there is lots of fun places that an esthetician can work.

You can search for a job in a salon or spa.

As a certified esthetician, you could start your own skincare business.

Many hotels and resorts have spas where guests can go to get esthetic services like facials and waxing.

If you want to work in the education side of esthetics, you can get your instructor license and teach others.

Skincare product companies hire estheticians to educate salon staff and other professionals about their products.

You could become a freelance makeup artist for weddings and photoshoots.

These are only a few examples of careers that certified estheticians can pursue but there are many, many more options.

What’s the Difference Between Esthetics and Cosmetology

In our full cosmetology program, you can learn everything that we teach in the esthetics program and more. Cosmetology encompasses all of esthetics in addition to hair design and nails. The big difference is that it takes 2,300 hours to become a certified cosmetologist while it only takes 600 hours to become a certified esthetician. So, if you don’t care to learn about hair and nails, you can build a career in esthetics much faster!

Ready to Get Started?

Are you excited to learn more about esthetics and to start building a new career? Contact us today! We can answer your questions about what it takes to become a certified esthetician and walk you through our enrollment process. We can’t wait to help you start your journey to an exciting new career.

What do you think makes a successful student at Phagans: Cosmetology is a combination of academics and hands on practical experience.
Well said Patty.

There are a couple key ingredients that go into running a beauty school. The first is people like Patty who are dedicated to helping students achieve their dreams. Our staff members at Phagans, Patty included, are all working to help students become beauty industry leaders because they love it. Seeing a student achieve great success and start living their dream is a greater reward for Phagans team members than any paycheck. They are an integral part of what makes Phagans School of Hair Design what it is.

The second key ingredient is our students. The hard work, determination, grit, and passion that our students display on a daily basis is inspiring. It’s the fuel that keeps the Phagans fire burning. We love our students and everything we do is centered on helping them reach their personal and professional goals.

Phagans School of Hair Design is like a big family and we think of our students as family members. It’s our students that make what we do so rewarding and fulfilling! We love helping them build the career of their dreams and watching them become rockstars in the beauty industry.

We like to catch up with students or graduates to ask them about their journey to becoming a beauty pro. Their answers to our questions and stories that they share are inspiring and can be a great example to younger students who are just getting started. We recently caught up with Samantha Borenheim. Samantha is not only a Phagans graduate, but worked for Phagans before enrolling in the cosmetology program.

We asked Samantha a few questions about her journey with Phagans and this is what she had to say:

How did you get involved with Phagans?
I got involved with Phagans back in May 2007 where I started in the admissions department at our Milwaukee campus, which later closed and turned into the Clackamas campus. I also worked at the Portland location for many years before attending school in the full cosmetology program at the Clackamas location. I was with Phagans for many years and consider them family.

How do you think you have changed since being at Phagans?
In the almost decade I was with phagans, I have changed considerably. I had been through many personal life changes and phagans was always there along the way to help and encourage me. I was at Phagans for almost a third of my life.

What do you like doing most?
I love making people feel beautiful! I feel honored to change how someone views theirself.
I also love doing runway and fashion shows. I like how the whole production is put together! I love making headpieces for runway shows and photoshoot, which is a new passion of mine. I love working with my clients at my day job at JCPenney. I love how JCPenney encourages their employees to be the best they can be. I love that they have training so I can continually grow.

What surprised you about beauty school?
I went from a very administrative position to starting beauty school and having to use my hand and eye coordination skills. Using a different part of my brain did not come easy. This cosmetology craft takes a lot of practice to develop! And you learn new things everyday.

What is your goal/dream now that you’ve graduated?
Now that I’ve graduated I create new goals every day and strive to be my best. I am so honored to be involved with Couve Couture and now Seattle Fashion Week. I am also the Director of Hair and Makeup for Desi Designs. And I just graduated in December 2014! But my journey has been many years in the making. My dreams are coming true, but it wasn’t easy. You have to work for it every day and make it happen. It doesn’t come to you…you have to manifest it and make it happen. I love what I do and wake up every day excited for what’s to come!

Sum up in one sentence what it means to be in the world of cosmetology.
Making people feel beautiful is my career…and I love what I do!!

Anything else?
I started off in the industry close to 20 years ago doing hair and makeup at Glamour Shot back in the 90’s and managed a salon in high school. Then I went in a very corporate direction, from Jenny Craig to the Better Business Bureau. I really feel like I finally found my home when I started with Phagans. It’s been an incredible experience!

Samantha is a great example of following your dreams and building a career that you can love. We are proud to have students like Samantha!
