Getting Your Oregon Cosmetology License in 6 Steps

Step 1: Research Your Schools

Your first step in the journey toward becoming a licensed cosmetologist in Oregon is to research and choose the right cosmetology school. The school you select will play a crucial role in your education, hands-on training, and preparation for the state’s licensing exam. Oregon has a range of cosmetology schools, including Phagans School of Hair Design, that offer different programs and specialties.

Consider the Following When Researching Schools:

• Location and Schedule: Look for a school that fits your lifestyle. Consider the location, hours, and class schedule to ensure it works with your current commitments.
• School programs: Decide which area of cosmetology interests you the most. Do you want to focus on our full cosmetology program, covering hair design, skincare, and nail technology, or would you prefer a dual program that emphasizes your specific area of interest?
• School authority: There are many beauty schools in the world to choose from, and Oregon is no exception. Here is where you will need to visit each potential school’s website and look into placement rates, graduation rates, and licensure rates. Make sure they are accredited, and that you can see yourself succeeding at your chosen school.
• Tuition: Do your research to figure out how you will be able to pay for your tuition. Does the school offer financial aid or scholarships? Can you make payments, and how much is the total cost? Get your finances in order before you sign up.

Step 2: Sign Up and Enroll in a Program

Once you’ve researched and selected the right school for your goals, the next step is to sign up and enroll in a cosmetology program. Here’s how to enroll:

1. Tour The School: Schedule a tour to get a firsthand look at the facilities, meet the instructors, and experience the learning environment.
2. Get Organized: Gather all necessary documents such as your high school diploma or GED, identification, and any other paperwork required for enrollment.
3. Interview With A Career Planner: Meet with a career advisor to discuss your goals, review the program options, and outline a personalized plan for your education.
4. Complete Your FAFSA: Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to explore financial aid options, scholarships, and grants that can help cover your tuition costs.
5. Enrollment Agreement & Enrollment Fee: Sign your enrollment agreement to officially secure your spot in the program and pay any required enrollment fees to finalize your registration.

Step 3: Complete Your Training

The state of Oregon requires that students must complete 1,835 school hours to obtain their cosmetology license.

Step 4: Take the Exam

Once you’ve completed your required training hours, you’re ready to take the Oregon Cosmetology Licensing Exam. Passing this exam is the final step to earning your cosmetology license. The Oregon Health Licensing Office administers the exam, which is a written exam:

1. Written Exam

The written portion of the exam covers the theory you’ve learned during your training. This includes:

• Sanitation and infection control
• Anatomy and physiology
• Oregon state laws and regulations
• Product knowledge and chemical safety

Passing the written and practical exam is essential for obtaining your license. It’s a good idea to study extensively during your time in school to ensure you’re prepared for the exam.

Step 5: Begin Your Career Search

Once you’ve passed the exam and received your cosmetology license, the exciting part begins—starting your career in the beauty industry. Here are a few career paths you might consider:

• Salon or Spa Stylist: Work as a hairstylist, esthetician, or nail technician in an established salon or spa.
• Freelance Cosmetologist: If you enjoy flexibility and independence, you can work as a freelance cosmetologist, offering on-site services for weddings, photoshoots, and other events.
• Salon Owner: If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, you may choose to open your own salon or spa.

Wednesday Addams has become an icon when it comes to Halloween. She’s the perfect mix of spooky and funny. The best part about Wednesday is that she’s one of the easiest looks to copy! Part your hair down the middle and add those two signature braids, and you’ve just become one of the most recognizable icons in Halloween culture. If you’re feeling like you want to complete the Wednesday look, add some white base for a pale look. Your dark eye makeup against your pale skin will help you embody the creepiness that is Wednesday Addams.

The Amazon Braid

The 2017 “Wonder Woman” film brought back everyone’s admiration of Diana Prince and her popularity is not going away anytime soon. Costumes of Wonder Woman have gone up after this latest movie release. With this being only the second Halloween since the latest Wonder Woman graced the big screens, people are still looking to dress up as the famous Amazonian princess. To help stand out from the others, substitute those famous beach wave curls for the braid that Diana wears at the beginning of the film. Just put your hair in a fishtail braid and you look like Wonder Woman in beautiful Themyscira.

With the introduction of Rey people were finally given a Star Wars hairstyle that could be replicated. All you need to do is add the three iconic buns and you’re suddenly from a galaxy far, far, away.

Are you not much of a costume person, but still want to get in on the Halloween fun? Don’t worry! There are other ways for you to channel an inspired movie look. One way is to color your hair. This is great for anyone who just doesn’t have the time or energy to get a costume together. This inspired look from Disney’s “Pocahontas” is perfect for anyone eager to add multiple colors in their hair. We love that people are turning Halloween into a fun way to try out new looks. Like the Spider-Man hairstyle, we suggest going to a hair salon to avoid any color complications. Coloring your hair is a complex process, especially with multiple colors. Oil Is Your Friend

For a long time, we thought that putting oil on our faces was a beauty no-no. While certain oils are bad for the skin, like certain oils are bad to eat, there are others that have massive benefits. Examples of good oils are argan oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, lavender oil, and coconut oil. And these oils don’t only make your skin glow. They’re full of vitamins and minerals and can treat a range of common problems, from general dry skin and eczema to acne prone skin and fine lines.

Put a Mask on It

Face masks are a classic staple when it comes to pampering yourself. There’s no reason why you should reserve masks for Sundays or a special trip to the spa. Sure, there are plenty of face masks on the market, but there are TONS of face masks you can make right in your own kitchen! For that “lit from within” look, try making masks from strawberries, oatmeal, cucumbers, avocados, bananas, yogurt, and oranges. If you’re not into DIY-ing, stop by our student salon and spa where one of our talented students can treat you to a relaxing facial under the supervision of licensed professionals.

Stop and Smell the Roses

Rose-infused products are all the rage in the skin care world because of the natural benefits of rose petals. Rose water has anti-inflammatory properties that leave your skin refreshed and hydrated. It also tones your skin and helps maintain its pH balance. When you feel tired in the middle of the day, spritz some rose water on your face for an instant refresh. Circling back to those trusty oils, rosehip oil can lighten scars and blemishes, tighten pores, reduce dark circles, and even out your skin tone. This makes for more glowing, youthful, and supple skin.

Relax and Enjoy that Avocado Toast

Avocados are trendy for a good reason. This tasty, green superfood is your skin’s best friend. Avocados are rich in nutrients like A, B, C, and E vitamins and minerals like potassium, calcium, and phosphorus. Studies have shown that eating avocados can result in various skin benefits. These include increased moisture levels, wrinkle reduction, UV protection, acne prevention, psoriasis treatment and more.

Try Some Supplements

Why not add an extra boost of nutrition to your morning routine? Taking daily supplements is a great way to improve the health and quality of your skin. Fish oil has omega-3 fatty acids that help with collagen production and fill in fine lines, reduce rosacea and eczema, and regulate moisture balance for healthy, glowing skin. When ingested, Vitamin A reduces sebum production and maintains skin’s protective tissue. It’s also useful for acne, psoriasis, and eczema. We all know that Vitamin C fights off the common cold. Its antioxidants are also great for your skin. Vitamin C supplements protect your skin from free radicals, build collagen, support cell strength, and fight against dullness.
