When most people think of beauty school, the first thing that usually comes to mind is hair, makeup, and skincare. While it’s true that Phagans School of Hair Design excels in training future beauty professionals, there’s more to beauty school than just mastering the art of beauty. Beyond the beauty skills needed to succeed in the industry, there are a lot of skills learned throughout the process that have far-reaching benefits in various aspects of life.

In this blog, we’re going over the unexpected skills you can gain while going to Phagans School of Hair Design!

Communication And Interpersonal Skills

The beauty industry thrives on social engagement, making it more than just a job. It’s an opportunity to connect deeply with clients and have a positive impact on their lives. Effectively communicating and understanding your client’s needs is vital for success, as it creates a sense of trust that goes beyond a client and stylist relationship. In the beauty industry, the power of connection and genuine interactions can transform a routine salon visit into a more memorable experience that keeps the clients coming back for more.

Time Management

Time is of the essence in the beauty world! From managing appointments to handling multiple clients at once, beauty professionals need to hone their time management skills. Here are some specific ways to gain and enhance time management skills in the beauty industry:

Create a schedule: Knowing your schedule can help you manage your working hours, appointments, and other life commitments. Set specific days and times you’re available to work and stay consistent with your schedule to avoid any mishaps!

Prioritize Appointments: Prioritize appointments based on the complexity of the service and allocate more time for them! If your client is in need of a more intricate hairstyle, adjust your schedule accordingly.

Utilize Appointment Software: Use appointment scheduling software or apps to manage bookings, send reminders to clients, and keep track of your daily schedule. This can help you stay organized and reduce the risk of double bookings.

Avoid Overbooking: Be mindful of your limitations and avoid overbooking yourself. Give yourself enough time between appointments to sanitize your tools, restock supplies, and recharge.

Set Realistic Timeframes: Develop a realistic understanding of how long each service should take. Avoid rushing through appointments to accommodate more clients, as this can compromise the quality of your work and lead to burnout.

Business Management

Part of our curriculum at Phagans is teaching you how to open your own salon. We want to expose our students to what life would be like after graduation, and that could mean running your own business! Whether you dream of creating a boutique hair studio or a luxurious spa, our goal is to empower you with the tools and confidence to turn your passion for beauty into a thriving and successful salon enterprise.

Stress Management

In the fast-paced world of beauty, stress can be a constant companion. But it doesn’t have to rule your world. With the right techniques, you can cope with the pressure and turn challenging situations into opportunities for growth. This not only ensures better performance as a beauty professional but can greatly improve your overall well-being!

Customer Service

Great customer service is vital in any industry, but especially in beauty. Your customers are your business and learning outstanding customer service skills can lead to greater success in your career. It goes beyond quality service and involves creating a positive experience. Here are some key elements of good customer service in the beauty industry:

Professionalism: This means dressing appropriately, using polite language, and handling any issues with grace.

Personalization: Treat each client as an individual! No two services should be the same and base their service off of their own wants and needs.

Honesty And Transparency: Be honest about your skill set and what can be achieved realistically. Don’t make promises you can’t keep and if you’re not confident in a service, say so!

Timeliness: Your client’s time in the chair should be respected. Try to adhere to appointment schedules and minimize any wait times!

Appreciation And Gratitude: Express your gratitude to your clients. They chose to be in your chair and a simple thank you can go a long way in making them feel appreciated.

Continuous Improvement: Staying updated with the latest trends and techniques helps provide the best possible experience for your clients. It shows you want to provide the best service possible!

Creativity

It goes without saying that the beauty industry is a creative field. Being a beauty professional sometimes means thinking outside the box. From hairstyling and makeup artistry to innovative skincare treatments, embracing creativity is what sets exceptional beauty professionals apart. Whether it’s crafting unique looks for clients or experimenting with new techniques, creativity fuels the passion and excitement that drive the beauty industry forward.

Ready To Become A Beauty Professional?

Beauty school is much more than meets the eye. Beyond the artistry of hairstyling and skincare, Phagans School of Hair Design offers students a diverse set of skills that go beyond the beauty industry. If you’re ready to become a beauty professional, don’t hesitate to contact us!

To help our students become better rounded individuals, we try to provide them with opportunities to serve. Here’s some of our regular events, why we hold them, and some of the results we get from doing it.

Haircuts for the Homeless

Every spring, summer, fall, and winter we select a few students to go to the Portland Rescue Mission to give free services to homeless people. Phagans has been doing this for about two years and each time has been an incredible experience. Each time this event rolls around, the sign up sheet for students fills up quickly. They are excited to help. They want the opportunity to serve those in the community who are in need. It’s awesome to see and when the event is over our students have a new perspective on things.

What Serving Does

The primary motivation for getting involved in this event is for the benefit of the people we serve. Even though this is the main reason we do it, our students also benefit in a huge way. It seems like when our students serve without expecting anything in return is when they get the most. The students leave the Portland Rescue Mission feeling really proud of themselves. The excitement that they have for their future careers also grows.

This event and others like it have also made a big impact on the culture and atmosphere at Phagans. The students who participate bring a special positivity back to their classrooms. They are oozing with an excitement to help others. This can mean helping a classmate, a client, or even one of their teachers. It’s contagious and raises everyone up.

The Importance of Beauty

Ms. Carla is one of the instructors who helps coordinate this event. She said that the people who come to the Portland Rescue Mission show “A lot of gratefulness, a lot of tears of happiness and joy. They’re just blown away by how kind our students are and how much care they take. Our students don’t care that [the clients] are homeless and that means everything to these people.”

The reactions of the clients is a great testament to the importance of something as simple as getting a haircut. For people who may not be getting beauty services on a regular basis, it can make a huge difference in the way they see themselves. It can even change the way they feel about themselves. For many licensed cosmetologists or estheticians, this is the most satisfying part of the job: seeing how the work you do changes how people feel.

Build, Improve, Strengthen

Phagans has been around for 75 years. In those years we have been building a reputation of excellence in education for beauty professionals. We have also been striving to be a pillar in the community. Building the community up is part of our school culture and identity. By partnering up with an awesome organization like the Portland Rescue Mission we feel like we can truly make a difference. One of our goals is for our students to graduate with a desire to make a difference, too.

Build the Career of Your Dreams

If you want to make a difference as a beauty professional, contact us. We can answer your questions about what it takes to become a beauty pro and where to start. You can schedule a tour by calling <a href:"tel:833-840-9039">833-840-9039 to see if Phagans is a good fit for you! We can’t wait to show you around.

Each and every member of the Phagans team is dedicated to making the learning experience at Phagans fabulous for the students. The captain of the Phagans team is the owner, Barbara Climaldi.

Barbara has dedicated her life to making Phagans the best place for students to become beauty professionals. Here’s a little bit more about her journey and what she does to help students thrive.

Barbara the Beauty School Boss

When it comes to beauty school, Barbara is no rookie. When she went to beauty school herself she learned everything she could. She put forth extra effort. She got her cosmetology license, then stayed at the school to continue learning. She worked in admissions, financial aid, and even became an instructor at the school she graduated from.

During her time working as a beauty school administrator Barbara was able to learn about all the different pieces that go into running a beauty school. Obviously this experience would come in handy when she became a beauty school owner herself. Now students at Phagans can benefit from all of Barbara’s hard work while she attended and worked at a beauty school.

Mentorship

While Barbara was working and learning at the school where she was a student, the owner of that school became Barbara’s mentor. As a mentor she helped Barbara build a career and get to where she is today. Barbara learned about the importance of having a good mentor and how big of a difference that can make.

Now that Barbara is a beauty school owner, she takes the time to talk to students. She wants to be there for them and make herself available to be a mentor herself. The success of her students is at the center of everything that Barbara does.

Student Success

Speaking of helping students succeed, when asked what her favorite part of working in beauty education is Barbara said, “I love to see students succeed. When they come to us they are very hungry for knowledge. When they get licensed and I see them out in the community, that for me is the biggest reward!” Barbara sees her students as people with amazing potential. She wants to help every student reach their full potential and achieve their dreams.

Culture

Helping students succeed is Barbara’s mission. It’s what she loves about her job. To help do this she tries to create a culture where students can flourish. Barbara said she strives to create “a culture of excellence in education. A very ethical culture. A culture that is supportive and fun. A culture that is helpful to our students.”

This is a testament to how much Barbara cares about her students. She wants to build a culture that helps her students become beauty professionals and better people. She wants the students of Phagans to become more than beauty pros, she wants to help them be leaders of the beauty industry.

The Phagans Family

“Phagans is a family business.” Not only do Barbara’s two sons work with her, but every staff member is part of the Phagans family. Barbara said “Finding good staff is always a challenge.” But once the right person is found, they become a Phagans family member.

Students are the other half of the family. When a student enrolls at Phagans they become part of a huge support system of teachers, mentors, and peers. Everyone works together to help each and every student reach their full potential. This family vibe is something that sets Phagans apart and something that Barbara strives to create.

Inspiration

Another thing that makes Barbara a great beauty school owner, mentor, and teacher to the students of Phagans is how she inspires. “You can achieve whatever you set out to do. All you have to do is believe it and work toward it and you’ll achieve it.” Barbara has seen the truth of this in her life and she wants each of her students to learn this life lesson! In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

See It. Believe It.

Want to see what Phagans is like for yourself? Schedule a tour of our school. A career planner will contact you, set up a time to show you around the school, and walk you through a day in the life of a Phagans student. You’ll be able to meet the Phagans family, and if Barbara is in, she’d love to say hi! If you think a career in the beauty industry might be for you, This could be the right first step! We can’t wait to help you begin your journey!

Well said Patty.

There are a couple key ingredients that go into running a beauty school. The first is people like Patty who are dedicated to helping students achieve their dreams. Our staff members at Phagans, Patty included, are all working to help students become beauty industry leaders because they love it. Seeing a student achieve great success and start living their dream is a greater reward for Phagans team members than any paycheck. They are an integral part of what makes Phagans School of Hair Design what it is.

The second key ingredient is our students. The hard work, determination, grit, and passion that our students display on a daily basis is inspiring. It’s the fuel that keeps the Phagans fire burning. We love our students and everything we do is centered on helping them reach their personal and professional goals.

Since Phagans School of Hair Design has provided, the hair, make-up, and styling for the Portland Rose Festival Princesses during the Queen’s coronation for several years, we thought we catch up with 2014 Queen Emma Audrey Waibel for a quick Q&A on her experiences. This year’s coronation is Saturday, June 6, 2015.

How did you get involved with the Rose Festival?

I attended the 2012 Queen’s Coronation and then also went to one of the metro coronations and was inspired by the confidence and civic involvement of the girls who applied.

What was it like being crowned Rose Festival Queen?

It’s incredibly overwhelming being surrounded by close friends and family and also being recognized as a leader by the city of Portland.

What are some highlights you’ve had over the last year ...

How did you get involved with the Rose Festival?

What was it like being crowned Rose Festival Queen?

It’s incredibly overwhelming being surrounded by close friends and family and also being recognized as a leader by the city of Portland.

What are some highlights you’ve had over the last year being Queen?

One of my favorite trips as the queen was attending the Pendleton Round-up. I loved being immersed in the “cowboy culture” there in Pendleton and spending time with the Pendleton and Happy Canyon Princesses.

How did you like the Phagans’ students helping you get ready for the coronation? Was you experience good with your artistic team?

I had such an incredible experience with my Phagan’s team. I felt like they heard what I wanted and we all worked together to create a vision. I was so pleased with how my hair and makeup turned out the day of coronation. In fact, I loved my look so mucho that day that I contacted some of my style team members just recently for an event that I have coming up!

What would you say to any girl thinking about being involved with the Rose Festival Court?

To go for it! The Rose Festival is not looking for any specific type of girl and so I would encourage anyone to try out.

Finally, what are your plans for the future?

Next year I will be attending Chapman University in Orange, California to study graphic design.
