With every class that begins their training with us, we strive to help create opportunities for our students to grow and expand. Personal growth is a huge part of our culture, as well as mastering the skills for your program.

Beyond that, we want our students to grow in the skills that are in demand, and help them create a portfolio that could help keep their client books full!

This last month we were able to do just that for our esthetics students.

Extending Our Skills, And Our Lashes

Lash extensions have been all the craze lately. Although they were first introduced way back in 2015 (yes, it feels that long ago for us, too) it has taken a few years for this seemingly simple process to hit the mainstream.

Nowadays chances are high you know one if not two – or five- people in your life who have had the procedure done.

Take a behind the door look as our esthetics work to increase their skill, and begin mastering this craft.

Offered as an additional course option to our current esthetics students, this one-day training helped our students to master this skill and become certified in it.

We were so excited that so many of our students took this opportunity and stuck to it like glue! With so much demand in this procedure, we can only imagine how this will impact their futures!

We had so much learning this skill, and everyone left with not only a new talent for their portfolio, but with long, luscious lashes.

At Phagans School of Hair Design, we are passionate about our students’ futures. We want every student who joins our family to find themselves in a career that brings them joy for years to come.

A big part of that dedication lies in the training we give our students. By offering additional training we help each future professional stay on top of trends and keep their skills in demand.

We can’t think of anything better than when a Phagans graduate follows their dreams and has a successful career. It was an obvious choice to have Dinah Ritchey as our first choice to be our Phagans All-Star! Dinah is a wonderful example of chasing your dreams and never giving up on yourself. Dinah graduated from Phagans in 2003 with a full cosmetology license, and right after dove into her career that led to her owning her successful salon, Urban Colorz. It was awesome to be able to take some time out of the our day and chat with Dinah about how she turned her passion into a successful career.

Have you always been interested in the world of beauty?

“I was always really into doing hair and makeup and I just decided to try it out. My plan was to go to college while working. I ended up going to Phagans and loving it so much that I stuck with it!”

What did Phagans teach you that you brought over to your business?

“I had Miss Nancy as my color teacher and she is amazing! Color is such a big thing in the industry now, and having the right teacher made the difference. That has been the most helpful thing in my career. It comes from the roots of what you’re learning.”

Tell me about the experience of opening your own salon!

“When I was in school, it was my dream to work at certain a salon that was located in downtown Portland. I went through the process there for interviews and I was hired! However, I had to wait for someone to move up as an apprentice in order to start. I had lots of clientele following me and waiting for me to be at the salon. I was doing “kitchen hair” while I was waiting on the apprenticeship and was anxious to start my career.

My mom, sister, and dad are all small business owners, and my older sister encouraged me to stop waiting and to just work for myself. I was young and kind of fearless, so I just went for it. I narrowed it down to the location we have now, and I signed the lease on the papers. Soon after the apprenticeship was available. It felt like it was meant to be. If I had gotten that job right away, this all wouldn’t have happened. It happened for a reason. It was definitely the right move.”

What is it about your salon that differs from others?

“There are a lot of “mom and pop” salons in the suburbs of portland. The trendy salons are downtown, and I couldn’t do that. I picked a central location and brought the trends and ideas to the suburbs. Originally, that is what made us stand out. Today, at the end of the day, our team atmosphere is what makes us stand out the most.”

What is your favorite part about owning your own salon?

“Everything about it. The culture I get to work in is like no other. I’m so lucky to work with the team that I have. We make our clients feel good about themselves. It’s a very rewarding job!”

What is the best part of the day at the salon?

“That’s so hard! I love every moment of the day. The relationships I form with my clients over the years is very exciting. A person can change from a client to a friend after one appointment. The joy of being able to catch up for a couple of hours while doing my work is so much fun.”

If you could give any advice to those that want to follow in your foot steps, what would it be?

“Education is HUGE! I took a big risk to open my own salon by not taking the apprenticeship. I got very lucky. The best thing that someone can to for their career is to go through an apprenticeship and go through the classes. Take advantage of school and what people can teach you. Never get discouraged. There are so many different options of online classes. Stay motivated and stay up on your education”

Thank You Dinah!

We can all agree that Dinah is a wonderful role model for all of us. She is proof that hard work pays off. It’s never too late to follow your dream and to make something out of it. Like Dinah said, “stay motivated!” Make sure to pay Dinah and her team a visit at Urban Colorz and follow their Instagram to stay up on their amazing work!

Who do you think our next spotlight should be on? Leave a comment on Facebook!

You have worked hard and we will miss you, but we know you will be successful and always a big part of the Phagans family.

How did you get involved with Phagans?

I was wanting to save up for Cosmetology School. My fiancé actually saw that Phagans was hiring. I thought it would be great to work at a cosmetology school to motivate me to save up. I was working at McDonalds at the time, so I was very excited to apply at Phagans.

How was your experience working and being a student?

It was hard work. I spent 64 hours a week at Phagans, but it was definitely worth it. It was great to have a job that worked around my school schedule and I didn’t have to drive somewhere else for work either. I was exhausted for a few months in the beginning. It was really hard to adjust, but your body gets used to new schedules.

How do you think you have changed since being at Phagans?

I could probably write a book about how much I have learned since being at Phagans. I have learned so much about myself and grown from this experience. I was 21 when I first started working at Phagans and now I’m 24. There was a lot of growing up for me. The biggest thing I’ve learned is to be yourself no matter what and if someone doesn’t like you, it isn’t the end of the world.

What do you like doing most?

I really enjoy doing mens’ cuts. It’s like you’re sculpting the hair in to a finished product that the wearer is wanting. Also, I love hair design. I’m a big fan of the 40’s and 50’s, which means pincurls, victory rolls and classy, sophisticated updos! I love how creative updos can be.

What surprised you about beauty school?

You always hear that beauty school is like high school all over again. But it wasn’t like that at all for me. I had a blast and I made a ton of friends. Being an employee, I thought it would be hard for the other students to trust me, but even so, I have made quite a few friends I know will be life-long friendships. I had no drama and I got along with everyone.

What is your goal/dream now that you’ve graduated?

I want to eventually be leasing my own station with a steady clientele, doing hair and makeup for weddings and also be a representative for a company like Joico. What’s great is that I can do all of those things. Right now I’m focused on finding the right salon to start out at. One step at a time!

Sum up in one sentence what it means to be in the world of cosmetology?

To be in the world of cosmetology, it feels empowering, inspiring and down right amazing.

Add anything else:

My advice to anyone who is in my position, working and going to school is to not give up. Don’t give up, keep going; it’ll be over before you know it and you will be so proud of yourself. It’ll be worth it.

Why did you choose Phagans?

It was the nicest school and they actually answered my inquiry! I moved here from Spokane to go to school and I love it. I love everything, the students, teachers and the clients, especially my return clients.

In which community event you will be involved with next?

My next community outreach adventure is for the Victory Outreach Church of Portland. I will be donating my time and knowledge to help the youth of the church with hair cuts and after-school tutoring. If I can help someone with a snip of my shears that’s cool! I was one of those kids and that’s why I am so passionate about helping.

What are you planning to do once you graduate?

I graduate in 2015 and plan to be ahead of the game and be established with a theatre company, helping my community in anyway I can. Making actors shine on stage and screen is my dream and goal.

Thanks Sharde, it was a pleasure talking with you, and we wish you every success for the future.

In many ways 2013 for Phagans was a year that allowed us to catch our breath. We have settled in to our new location at Clackamas Town Center, did a little remodeling of our Lloyd Center location, became even more engaged with our community, and spent the year growing the rolls of our alumni.

This year also was the 65th Anniversary of Phagans, so we spent the year honoring founder Wilma Lee Phagans Harrington with a number of events, prizes, and goody bags for customers.

Among our schools’ biggest accomplishments this year was both locations passed their 6-year accreditations “without limitations”, which in our world means with flying colors! I’m very grateful and proud of our staff for helping us achieve this high honor and carry on the tradition of excellence at Phagans.

I’m also grateful to the staff for working so hard to give our students what they need to graduate from school. Their efforts mean we get to see many of our graduates go to work in this wonderful field and achieve their dreams.

Most of all I’m grateful for our students. They take on school work but they also support the schools by donating time and services to various causes in our communities. Some do this while working and raising families. They’re enthusiastic, generous and remarkably talented.

The fashion industry is a dynamic one and 2014 promises to bring more change to Phagans, all for the better. But one thing is a certainty: The people in our community – the faculty, staff, and students – are who make Phagans a special place for all of us.

With Love,
Barbara Climaldi

“Plan for the unexpected…it will happen!”

How did you get involved with the beauty industry?

In 1974, right after graduating high school, I took a summer job at Phagans in Salem. I was not a good fit for the job. In fact, it was my worst job ever! I quit, but my manager at the school told me to come back the following week in a white uniform because I was going to be a student. I spent the whole weekend looking for something else to get involved in. I didn’t want to go back – beauty school was not my dream!

But now, nearly 40 years later, I can look back on a long career in the beauty industry. And that manager who told me to come back as a student is now my mentor and friend, Karen Diekman.

What was school like?

It was very difficult. I learned a lot about myself…good and bad! I learned that I liked doing hair, and the instructors meant business. I had a good education. It was physically and emotionally taxing – it wasn’t easy. I had to grow up because this was the real world!

How long have you been teaching?

I’ve been teaching since 1980. I’m always inspired by how creative the students are and how their lives change going through school.

What do you like most about your job?

Each day brings new challenges. Not only am I concerned with the day-to-day running of the school, but I also work with the instructors to make sure we are providing the best education for our students. It’s about having a good team and having fun too. It’s important to find time during the day to enjoy each other.

What advice would you give prospective students?

Plan for the unexpected…it will happen! In a short time, you will become someone totally different. Our industry is so powerful.

Celebrity makeup artist and Phagans student M’chel Bauxal has seemingly done it all – worked with celebrity clients like Alicia Silverstone, Dakota Fanning, and Barak and Michelle Obama; advised major networks like ABC, NBC, FOX, TNT, and MTV; and worked with the local productions of Portlandia and Leverage.

But when she saw an opportunity to amp up her star power even more by working backstage at the Emmy’s, M’chel jumped at the chance.

M’chel saw a posting on the Hair and Makeup Artist Network for a job working at the 2011 Emmy’s and applied immediately – within 15 minutes. Along with the application, she sent written recommendations, portfolio, resume, video, links to her website and social networks. The job required working with two Redbook contest winners, two hair and makeup bloggers who are well-known in the industry, and two Redbook marketing staff members. Within days, M’chel had interviewed for the position and gotten the job.

She was elated!

After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and spending more than a decade building her career in the bright lights of L.A., M’chel moved home to Oregon in 2004. Since then she’s continued to develop her career, working locally as a makeup artist and beauty expert. In February 2011, she enrolled at Phagans Clackamas location to advance her hair styling skills so she could offer cut and color to her celebrity and high profile clients.

But M’chel was not yet done dazzling L.A., as her recent experience at the Emmys illustrates. “The experience was fabulous, surreal,” said M’chel. “It was an honor to be asked.”
