What Programs Does Phagans School of Hair Design Offer?

At Phagans School of Hair Design, we offer many different educational paths within the beauty industry. We know each student is unique and has different career goals. That’s why we’ve made it easy for you to learn what’s important to you!

We offer a full program, several dual programs, and a few standalone programs.

Full Program

Our full program is your fastest track to becoming a full specialist! It combines learning in all three branches of cosmetology: Hair Design, Nail Technology, and Esthetics. If you want to become a well-rounded cosmetologist, this course is for you! There are also many benefits to learning more than one specialty that can help you find a thriving career.

This program is 1835 hours of instruction and starts with classes in Hair Design. You will branch out into learning nail technology and esthetics from there!

Dual Programs

Our dual programs fast-track learning in two fields. You can choose from a few combinations based on your interests and career goals:

• Hair Design/ Nail Technology: 1391 hours
• Hair Design/ Esthetics: 1594 hours
• Esthetics/ Nail Technology: 725 hours

If you start with a dual program and decide to become a full specialist instead, you can always add the required course after enrolling! Just remember this will take a little more time than enrolling in the full program to begin with. For example, if you start with the dual Hair Design/ Nail program (1391 hours) and add the standalone Esthetics program (600 hours), it will take you a total of 1991 hours to become a full specialist instead of 1835.

Standalone Programs

Our standalone programs help you master only one area of cosmetology. Some programs (like Barbering or our Cadet Instructor programs) are only available as a standalone.

• Barbering: 786 hours
• Hair Design: 1150 hours
• Esthetics: 600 hours
• Cadet Instructor: 1,000 hours approximately

Note: Our Nail Technology program is not available as a standalone program. If you want to learn nail technology, you will need to enroll in either our full specialty program or one of our dual programs. If you first enrolled in the dual Hair Design/ Esthetics program, you can always add Nail Technology to become a full specialist.

What Are the Benefits of Learning Multiple Specialties?

Now that you know what paths you can take, the next question is whether you should enroll in our full program, a dual program, or a standalone program. While you can still have a thriving career with only one specialty, there are several benefits to learning multiple. Here are just a few!

1. Explore Your Passions
   Not sure what your passion is? Enrolling in a dual program or our full program allows you to explore. Or, if you already have one passion, enrolling in multiple specialties may lead you to another passion! You may start out interested in hair, but find that you love esthetics just as much. You never know what you may love until you try it!
2. Increased Earning Potential
   Having multiple specialties can increase your earning potential. It allows you to offer more skills and services to your clients, giving you more opportunities to upsell. This can help you increase your ticket price and your bottom line!
3. Fill Your Books
   If your clients come to you for multiple services, you will also likely see them more often. For example, your hair client used to see you every other month for color, but now sees you every three weeks for a nail fill! Being a one-stop-shop for your clients can help you fill your books.
4. More Marketable
   Have your eye on a certain dream salon or spa? Having more skills makes you more marketable during job hunting. This may give you a better opportunity to potentially snag your dream job!
5. More Career Options
   Knowing multiple skills can also increase your career options. For example, knowing hair and makeup (which you can learn in our dual Hair Design/ Esthetics program) can open the door for you to work in film, music videos, or photoshoot work! Many of these editorial fields look for someone proficient in both hair and makeup. Knowing manicuring as a full specialist can open even more doors!

Tips to Choose the Right Program for You

Still not sure what program is right for you? Here are a few questions to consider that may help you decide:

1. What careers interest me?
2. What skills would be beneficial to have in these careers?
3. What added skills could help set me apart?
4. What skills do I definitely want to learn?
5. What skills might I want to learn?
6. What’s the fastest program track to teach me all I want to know?

You may also find it helpful to shadow industry professionals in different careers! Spend a day talking with your go-to nail technician, hairstylist, or esthetician. They may help you learn different benefits to each field you were previously unaware of.

Is Flexible Scheduling Available?

Yes! At Phagans School of Hair Design, we want our education to work for you. That’s why we offer flexible scheduling options, including evening and weekend classes.

• Evening Schedule
  Monday – Friday from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm
• Day Schedule
  Thursday – Saturday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

Much like traditional colleges, many beauty schools offer scholarships and financial aid to those who qualify. However, the first step is finding an accredited school that offers financial aid.

Beauty schools offering financial aid must be accredited by an appropriate accrediting body such as the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences (NACCAS). You can search their database to see if the school of your choice has been accredited.

Phagans School of Hair Design is accredited by NACCAS and offers federal funding to those who qualify. They also accept a number of scholarships throughout the year and offer different payment plan options. Be sure to contact your school to see what they offer and what you might qualify for.

After months of cold, rainy, grey weather, it is finally summer in the Pacific Northwest. The sun is shining and temperatures are rising. We’ve already endured our first heat wave of the season.

With all this warm weather, we’re shifting into shorts, sundresses, and sandals for the next few months. And while we’re ready for the change, our feet may not be. Get your tootsies ready for summer with a skin-smoothing, professional gel pedicure. Here are three reasons why gel pedis are the way to go for sandal season.

Long-lasting look: Just like with a gel manicure, gel pedicures are the longest lasting type of treatment for your toes. Baked on with UV light, the gel adheres to your toe nails, giving you a glossy look that resists chips and breaks for nearly twice as long as a regular pedicure.

But beware that all that fun in the sun can wreak havoc with the nails on your hands and feet. Here’s how:

Dry Weather

As we write this, acres and acres in the state of Colorado are burning due to the forest fires* brought on by dry, hot summer weather. In Portland and Vancouver, we are lucky to have much more moisture in the air, but our area does dry out considerably during the summer months. Dry weather and wind can suck the moisture right out of your body, including your finger and toe nails. Be sure to drink lots of water each day to stay hydrated and use hand and foot cream to moisturize your nails.

Sun Exposure

Extended amounts of sun that we’re so grateful for during the summer season can also harm your skin and nails. In addition to sun burn, sun exposure can dry cuticles and harm your nail growth. Always use a sunscreen on your skin and hands to help protect them during the summer.

Chlorine

Hot, sunny weather means more time in the pool. But chemicals like chlorine in the pool can do fast damage to your easy, breezy, summer look by turning hair greenish, fading polish on your nails, and making previously healthy nails brittle, weak, and prone to breakage. To combat this damage, always wear base and top coats with your polish and wash and dry your hands and hair after a dip in the pool.

Outdoor Activity

Whether you are a surfing, hiking, gardening, or simply barbecuing in the back yard, more time outdoors can equate to more exposure to the elements. As we’ve seen, wind, sun and dry weather can cause dry, brittle nails and flaky, callused feet. Be sure to moisturize and use sunscreen.

Diet

Sometimes in the summer we’re eating on the run and not getting the nutrients we need to keep our nails healthy. Be sure to drink lots of water, indulge in the bevy of fresh fruits and veggies available at the local farmers market, and take your vitamins. Your nails will thank you for it.

Gel nail polish has been one of the most popular trends in the beauty industry for quite some time now. And with good reason! It offers a longer-lasting manicure that looks great and doesn’t chip easily. We’re going over the pros and cons of using gel nail polish for manicures!

What Is Gel Nail Polish?

Before we jump into the pros and cons, let’s first discuss what gel nail polish is! Gel nail polish is a type of nail polish that is cured under UV or LED light to harden and set the polish. It’s different from traditional nail polish, which air dries and can also be prone to chipping and smudging. 

If you’re tired of spending time at the salon having your nails done only to see chipping and cracking a few days later, a gel manicure may be just the answer you’re looking for. 

How Does It Work?

The process begins like a regular manicure with your nails being shaped, smoothed, and buffed and your cuticles being cleaned up and trimmed. Then the manicurist will rough up the surface of your nail using an emery board or metal file. This slight texture on your nail surface will help the gel adhere better.

Finally, the manicurist will apply a gel base coat, a gel color of your choice, and a gel topcoat. In between each of the application steps, you will bake or cure your nails under a UV lamp. This ensures that the gel adheres correctly to your nails and dries completely. Usually, by the time you leave the salon, your nails will be completely dry – no more worrying about messing your manicure as you dig for your keys at the bottom of your purse.

Gel helps reduce chipping, especially in the first week.
