Cosmetology school is a great alternative to traditional college that will allow you to pursue a future in the beauty industry. Most students graduate from cosmetology school much faster than they’d be able to graduate from a four-year college. Exactly how long it takes to finish beauty school depends on whether you attend part-time or full-time, but it usually doesn’t take more than two years.

Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit or accomplishments. In most cases, they don’t need to be repaid. Various scholarships are available throughout the year, and different students qualify for different ones. The Beauty Changes Lives organization is one of the most notable sources of beauty school scholarships in the U.S.—it has awarded over 600 scholarships to aspiring industry professionals since 2013.

Financial Aid

Phagans School of Hair Design is a Title IV school, so we offer several financial aid options to our students. To find out if you qualify for financial aid, the first step is filling out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form. After that, you’ll find out if you qualify for any of these financial aid options:

• Pell Grants – Pell Grants are given to certain students in dire need of financial assistance. They’re usually given to students pursuing specific types of degrees or certifications (for instance, a makeup certification). To qualify for a grant, you might have to meet certain academic requirements, such as a minimum GPA. Like scholarships, grants are a great way to help pay for cosmetology school because they usually don’t have to be repaid.
• Direct PLUS Loans – Direct PLUS Loans are available to eligible graduate and professional students, as well as some parents. These loans have to be paid back.
• Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans – These low-interest loans can help students pay for beauty school, but they must be repaid. Subsidized loans do not require interest payments while you are attending school at least half-time and for the first six months after you graduate. Unsubsidized loans require you to pay interest throughout the life of the loan, even while you’re still attending school

• I don’t qualify for financial aid.

You don’t know what you don’t know! Always fill out the FAFSA® because, after all, it’s free! You might qualify for aid or more aid than you think. Additionally, there are other forms of financial assistance such as scholarships and work-study programs that you might be eligible for.

• What’s the difference between a grant and a loan?

Grants and loans function differently. Grants are typically funds that do not need to be repaid, whereas loans are borrowed money that must be repaid with interest over a set period of time. • School authority: There are many beauty schools in the world to choose from, and Oregon is no exception. Here is where you will need to visit each potential school’s website and look into placement rates, graduation rates, and licensure rates. Make sure they are accredited, and that you can see yourself succeeding at your chosen school.
• Tuition: Do your research to figure out how you will be able to pay for your tuition. Does the school offer financial aid or scholarships? Can you make payments, and how much is the total cost? Get your finances in order before you sign up.

Phagans School of Hair Design strives to provide its students with the necessary tools to not only complete their training, but to be prepared to pass the state exam and obtain a job in their chosen field of study. 

Now that you’ve chosen to come study with us, it’s time to get the ball rolling!

Step 2: Sign Up

This is the best part! You are just beginning your journey and you likely can’t wait to get started! Many schools will have you contact them and from there set up a time for you to meet and tour the school. Visiting campus is the best way to see what the school has to offer. During your tour, you’ll be able to meet with a member of the team and answer any questions you may have. A tour is the perfect opportunity for you to get to know the school, and for the school to get to know you. Make sure you are checking all the boxes during this step so you don’t miss any necessary information.

Step 3: Complete Your Training

The state of Oregon requires that students must complete 1835 school hours to obtain their cosmetology license. 

Make sure that during your time with Phagans, you are arriving to your courses on time, you are dressed appropriately, and you are in a mindset to truly learn and grow with us. The effort you put into your education will come back tenfold. Our instructors are dedicated to producing job-ready graduates, and we hope our students have a similar mindset.

Step 4: Take the Exam

Visit Oregon.gov to find the required IDs, practice exams, and office hours for taking the exam. Make sure you are choosing to take the written exam for the correct emphasis (i.e. cosmetology vs. barbering).

In addition to completing your hours with Phagans, you can study for your exam by downloading Oregon’s practice exams, asking to practice on friends and family, and asking for additional training from our professional instructors. We believe each of our students can pass the state exam.

Step 5: Begin Your Career Search

Congratulations! You have successfully passed the state exam and are likely ready to begin showing your skills to the world! We understand how eager you are, and we want to help you find a career that will be rewarding for you for many years. Cosmetology can be a very rewarding and satisfying career. We’re excited to see where you take it!

Step 6: Improve Your Craft

The beauty industry is ever-changing. There are always new techniques and skills to learn in the world of cosmetology. That means that those within the community should be growing with it. You should always be pushing yourself to be better, but you can do even better by looking for new trends and shadowing others who have been in the industry longer than you. Try to push your limits. Try to explore new ideas. These are the ways that you can be successful, and ways that you can build your clientele.

Can Beauty School Students Receive Financial Aid?

Yes. If the beauty school of their choice has federal approval to offer financial aid, beauty school students can potentially receive financial aid. Federal financial aid is only available for qualifying students.

The rumor that only traditional college students can receive aid is untrue!

Who Qualifies for Financial Aid?

Aid is reserved for those who need it. There are a variety of circumstances that would warrant federal financial aid being granted. You never know if you’ll qualify unless you ask! Always, always, always fill out the forms to get started to see if you can receive some type of aid. Don’t rule yourself out.

How Do I Start the Process?

It starts with filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®). To get your application started, create an FSA ID. The website will walk you through what to do next and the information you’ll need to complete the application.
