Description: Barbering, which is the study of hair and its associated structures, hair and scalp disorders and diseases. It includes the related services of, sculpting (cutting), styling (wet & thermal), shampooing & conditioning, wiggery and barbering.
Format: Students progress through the course in four levels: freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. To progress from one level to the next, students must complete the required hours, self-study workbook, required operations, written evaluations and practical evaluations for each level. For the practical evaluations, students are required to bring in models. Students are also required to maintain progress records throughout the course.
The first eight weeks of the freshman level is spent in a classroom setting where students learn the basics in all areas of barbering, and practice on manikins, models and each other. The classes are structured in three two-week units in Solid Form*, Layered Form*, Graduated Form*. The two-week units may be taken in any order, and students may start in any of the units. (*These terms are types of basic hair-cutting techniques which are covered in each of the respective levels. In addition to the cutting techniques, each two-week block also includes instruction in hair styling, customer service, safety and sanitation.) Students are given written and practical evaluations at the end of each two-week unit.
After successful completion of the eight weeks of freshman classes, students are assigned to the clinic floor to begin practice of technical skills and customer service skills. Once assigned to the clinic, students attend classes each week with other students in their level. Each level of the course has a set of required classes which must be made-up by the student if missed. Before a student may advance to the next level of the course, he or she must complete a minimum of 75% of the required classes for the current level.
In addition to the advanced classes, students also attend a morning theory and state board review class in preparation for written exams and for the state licensing exam.
